Buzz Rickson A-1 Flight Jacket Men's Reproduction of A1 Leather Bomber Jacket BR80649 Seal-Brown
This men's casual leather jacket is crafted in Japan by Buzz Rickson, a renowned military clothing brand from Toyo Enterprise. This Buzz Rickson jacket is a reproduction of the original A-1 flight jacket (Type A-1 A.C. ORDER No.31-800P), first introduced in 1927 for use by U.S. Army Air Corps pilots and produced until 1931, when it was succeeded by the A-2 jacket. Buzz Rickson has preserved the historical authenticity and intricate details of the original design while enhancing the material for modern use. Instead of the original sheepskin, this jacket is made from durable horsehide, ensuring it can withstand the test of time while offering the same classic look and feel. This jacket features a two-layer construction, with an outer shell made from 100% pure, thick horsehide leather in seal brown, which has been vegetable-tanned and Pigmented finish. The interior is lined with lightweight cotton broadcloth for added comfort. This jacket is designed with a buttoned front closure that passes through buttonholes, reflecting a time before zippers became widely used. It features a wool ribbed knit stand collar with two loop button closures, a ribbed knit waistband with two snap buttons, and ribbed knit cuffs for a comfortable fit. The jacket also includes button-flap pockets on the lower front, combining style with practicality. This jacket is offered in Japanese (Asian) sizes and has a modern fit with clean lines, featuring a cropped look with a shorter length. Buzz Rickson has updated the fit of this jacket to a more modern cut, making it more fashionable and suitable for a casual look than the classic fit. This item is a new, original creation from Buzz Rickson, combining the historical accuracy of the A-1 jacket with modern durability..

Outer shell : The original A-1 jackets were typically made from sheepskin, which is soft and flexible, allowing for easy movement. However, some reproductions, like the BR80635, use horsehide, which is much more durable and develops a unique patina over time. Horsehide is known for its toughness, making it a preferred choice for those seeking a long-lasting jacket. While the original A-1 jackets were made from sheepskin, which offered flexibility and ease of movement, this jacket is crafted from horsehide, known for its superior durability compared to sheepskin. The horsehide used in this jacket undergoes a full vegetable tanning process, followed by hand-applied pigmented finish. This method of finishing gives the leather a distinctive and unique appearance, with natural variations in color that will only deepen with wear, adding character through creases and wear marks. It has a rugged grain and an old-fashioned appearance on the fabric's surface, contributing to its fashionable vintage feel and look. This heavyweight, real leather merges durability with natural softness, ensuring comfort in wear. Although horsehide is inherently tough, it remains pliable. It is characteristic of horsehide not to have a smooth surface, resulting in many wrinkles. These wrinkles, unique to horsehide, give the jacket a distinct appeal, different from smoother leathers. Such wrinkles are normal in a horsehide jacket and are not considered defects. For a vintage appearance, the leather of this jacket retains the original tastes of horsehide. Wear and Aging : Patina Development: Over time, the Type A-1 jacket will develop a patina unique to the wearer, especially if made from horsehide. The creases, wrinkles, and slight color variations that appear with wear contribute to the jacket’s vintage charm and authenticity.
Lining shell : Made of 100% cotton thin, lightweigt, density and tightness weave broadcloth fabric. This lining is smooth and sleek so you can take the jacket off and put it on easily.
Type of insulation : No inside padding. No fill.
Placket type : The front is designed with button closures. The collar rib has two loop buttons, the body features five buttons that go through the buttonholes, and the waistband includes two snap buttons. Unlike later flight jackets that used zippers, the Type A-1 features a buttoned front closure. This design is reflective of the era before zippers became standard in military clothing.
Pocket : Two buttoned flap pockets on the lower front, with a convenient pen slot included in the left-side pocket.
Ribbed Knit Cuffs, Collar, and Waistband: The A-1 jacket has ribbed knit cuffs, collar, and waistband that help to keep warmth in and provide a snug fit, which was essential for pilots flying in open cockpits.
Collar : The ribbed stand collar with loop button closure can be worn either standing up or folded down, depending on your preference.
Cuff type : The two-ply knit rib cuffs in brown color with the narrow weave graduating into the wider weave at top.
Pattern Type : Plain, solid color, basic, simple, blank.
Sleeve Style : Set-in sleeves.
Sleeve Length : Long sleeves.
Label : TYPE A-1 DWG> NO. AN-6501 A.C. ORDER No.31-800P
Other details : The two-ply worsted-wool knit ribbed sleeve ends and waistband are comfortable and flexible. Two-piece back as found on all vintage A-1 Jackets. The underarms have eyelets to let moisture and humidity out. This Buzz Rickson's Type A-1 jacket is a meticulously crafted, historically accurate piece of outerwear that combines functionality with timeless style. Its durable construction and classic design make it a versatile addition to any wardrobe, especially for those with an appreciation for vintage military attire. *This item has been specially treated to produce a vintage-like effect.
