The so-called "Tanker Jacket" was originally developed and adopted as a uniform specifically for U.S. Army tank crewmen during World War II. While commonly referred to as the "Tanker," its official designation was Jacket, Combat, Winter?a cold-weather combat uniform.

Designed for use within the cramped interiors of tanks, this jacket features a simple, streamlined construction with no epaulettes or extraneous details that could snag or restrict movement in tight spaces. The clean design prioritized functionality, ease of wear, and maneuverability in combat conditions.

The standard color used for military uniforms at the time was "khaki." While today this term generally refers to a light brown or olive drab tone, its origin lies in the Hindi word khak, meaning "dust" or "earth." Prior to World War I, many U.S. military uniforms were a pale, almost white shade. However, this proved too conspicuous on the European battlefield, where camouflage was critical. As a result, the U.S. Army adopted a more muted, earth-tone olive color for its uniforms?one that blended better with natural surroundings?and began referring to this new tone as "khaki."

Typically, tanker jackets are most often seen in this standard khaki (olive drab) color. However, this particular piece represents an extremely rare brown version of the Tanker Jacket.
