Natural dyes have been used since olden times in japan as a way to incorporate the beautiful colours of nature into lifestyles. Natural dyes have been used for more than one thousand years ago. This item is one of the Studio D'artisan Amami Dorozome collection. This item has been garment dyed with a natural dye (overdying with natural plant and mud dye) to recreate natural colors that have been inherited from ancient japan. Dorozome (mud dye in English) features a very traditional (1300-year old) and natural mud dyeing technique from Amami Oshima, islands north of Okinawa, Japan. Mud dyeing is a traditional technique that requires time and skill. First, boil wood chips of the native Japanese hawthorn tree. and then dye the garment repeatedly in the extracted liquid. Next, when dipped in muddy water from Amami-Oshima Island with high iron content, the tannic acid contained in the hawthorn and the iron rich mud react chemically to dye the tastefully austere natural brown color. It originates from ancient strata, and the particles are round and refined, so they can be dyed without damaging the cotton threads. The threads become soft and supple by repeatedly rubbing the mud that gives unique brown earthy colour to textiles. Also natural dyes also reacts to sunlight, so the colour changes slowly with time and sun exposure. And with wear and wash the natural-dyed fabric will fade to create a unique personalized garment. However, traditional technique of natural dyeing have disappeared because of the fast-paced consumer society. Studio D'artisan offer natural dye item to revive the wisdom of our ancestors who coexisted with nature.
