The brand is renowned for its exceptional vintage reproduction garments, accessories, and signature craftsmanship. Part of Buzz Rickson's U.S. Navy collection, this model is a modern reproduction of the WWII U.S. Navy Denim Anti-Gas Parka - also known as the U.S. Navy Gas Protective Parka, Gunner's Parka, or Gunner Smock - originally issued by the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s as protective gear against gas attacks. This reproduction is based on the earliest denim version. Expertly crafted with Buzz Rickson's hallmark attention to detail, it meticulously recreates the original's distinctive features, faithfully capturing the heritage and spirit of classic U.S. military tradition. Its timeless character reflects historical authenticity while working effortlessly with today's casual fashion, bridging vintage aesthetics and modern style. The fabric is 100% cotton, unlined, single-ply deep-blue indigo denim. It is woven on old-style shuttle looms, resulting in a rugged, textured appearance while also providing a surprisingly comfortable and flexible feel. The surface of the denim is intentionally left with a hairy, slightly fuzzy texture to evoke a vintage look and feel. As part of the finishing process, the garment is pre-washed (one-wash) to minimize shrinkage. This parka is characterized by its intricate triple-layered front placket with a half button-up closure for superior protection, an oversized integrated hood designed to fit over a Navy gas mask - complete with adjustable drawstring, buckle straps for securing mask hoses, and button-fastened tabs for enhanced face coverage?and an adjustable drawcord hem to seal out wind and chemical agents. Additional features include two lower front patch pockets with non-fastening flaps, set-in long sleeves, white contrast stitching throughout, and period-correct garment size embroidery on the interior back neck. This parka is available in US/EU sizes and features a relaxed fit. Originally designed to be worn as a protective outer shell over other layers, this parka offers a generous, roomy silhouette for comfortable wear. Fabric : The fabric is 100% cotton, unlined, single-ply deep-blue indigo denim, expertly woven on old-style shuttle looms. This traditional weaving method produces a distinctive, rugged texture. Owing to the natural pliability of cotton fibers and the weaving technique, the fabric also offers a comfortable wear, despite its substantial and durable feel. The surface of the denim is intentionally left with visible nap and subtle fuzziness, enhancing the vintage aesthetic and reproducing the look and tactile qualities of WWII-era denim garments. As part of the finishing process, the garment is pre-washed (one-wash) to minimize shrinkage. The more you wear, the more denim will fade beautifully.
Front Placket (Chest Closure) : This parka features a pull-on style with a half button-up closure. The front opening at the neck, which extends down from the hood, is distinguished by a highly intricate triple-layer construction. Specifically, the placket consists of three overlapping internal, intermediate, and external flaps, with button closures arranged in a complex, multi-layered system. To fasten the closure, the buttons on the internal flap are inserted through the buttonholes on the intermediate flap, and then further secured through the buttonholes on the external flap. This sophisticated design greatly reduces the risk of toxic gas, wind, or rain infiltrating through the front closure.
Hood : The oversized, fully integrated (non-detachable) hood is designed to fit comfortably over a Navy gas mask and features a cotton drawstring threaded around the edge, allowing it to be cinched tightly around the face or mask for a secure seal. Two adjustable straps with buckles on either side of the hood-collar are designed to secure the gas mask’s twin hoses in place, preventing them from flapping or snagging and allowing the garment to integrate seamlessly with standard USN gas mask sets, such as the ND Mark IV model. The hood is equipped with two button-fastened tabs that allow it to be closed up to a high position, providing additional protection for the lower part of the face.
Drawcord Hem : Adjustable drawstring around inside bottom hem to seal the bottom opening of the parka around the hips, reducing risk of chemical agents or wind entering from below.
Pockets: Two external patch pockets on the lower front of the parka, each with a flap that does not have a fastening.
Sleeve Style : Set-in sleeves.
Sleeve Length : Long sleeves.
Other details : The garment size is directly embroidered onto the interior back neck area for clear identification and period-correct authenticity. For example, size S has "S" embroidered on the back. Accented with contrast stitching in white throughout.

About the U.S. Navy Denim Anti-Gas Parka (Gunner Smock)
In the early 1940s, the U.S. Navy adopted this parka as protective outerwear against chemical agents. Originally developed and classified as protective clothing for chemical warfare - specifically for use in gas decontamination duties - it was issued to personnel assigned to hazardous operations such as gas decontamination work. The design allowed it to be worn over a gas mask, and crew members routinely trained in its use to prepare for emergencies. Because this parka was also widely worn by anti-aircraft gunners aboard ships, it became popularly known as the “Gunner’s Parka” or “Gunner Smock.”
There are two main variations of this parka, distinguished by material and color. The early model was made from indigo-dyed denim, while the later model was produced in white cotton twill that had been impregnated with chemical protective agents. By the time of the D-Day landings, the white cotton twill version had become the standard issue. These white twill parkas were sometimes further dyed according to operational needs: for example, in keeping with Navy tradition, blue versions were issued to shipboard personnel, while beach landing troops (including naval landing parties and the USMC) received parkas dyed in olive green. During the Normandy landings, it was reported that U.S. Navy Beach Battalion personnel wore this parka in green.
Throughout WWII, the anti-gas parka served as vital protective gear for Navy crewmen and amphibious units, representing an important measure against the threat of chemical warfare.
This product is an authentic reproduction of the early denim version of this historic parka.
