Sugar Cane Men's Vintage-Inspired Denim Work Coat, 11 oz. 100% Cotton Unlined Chore Jacket with Asymmetrical Chest Pockets, One-Wash, Made in Japan (SC15655, 421A Dark Indigo)
Sugar Cane
This men's denim work coat is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Based on classic work coats from the years following World War II, this model is constructed from 11 oz. 100% cotton indigo denim woven with indigo-dyed warp yarns and gray weft yarns, giving the fabric a subtly heathered appearance and depth of color. Its unlined construction combines a five-button front, a turn-down collar with a collar stand, two-piece set-in sleeves, asymmetrical chest pockets, reinforced lower patch pockets, an interior pocket, and a two-panel back with a center seam. The left chest pocket incorporates three storage compartments, while visible reinforcement and pocket-attachment stitching express the practical construction of traditional work clothing. The one-wash finish softens the fabric's initial crispness while preserving its body and natural surface texture. A regular fit with moderate chest room and a body that extends over the hip area gives these vintage-inspired details proportions suited to everyday casual wear.
Size and Fit Guide:
Gender: Men.
The coat has a regular fit with moderate room through the chest, avoiding an excessively tight or oversized silhouette. The body falls relatively straight from the underarms to the hem without pronounced shaping at the waist. Its length extends over the hip area, creating the longer outline of a classic work coat compared with a short denim trucker jacket.
Set-in sleeves define the shoulder and armhole seams, while the lower front edges curve gently into the hem to create rounded front corners. The denim gradually softens and settles with wear and washing, allowing the coat to develop a more relaxed, naturally worn-in feel over time.
The actual fit will depend on your body type, the thickness of the layers worn underneath, and your preferred amount of room. Please measure a similar work jacket or chore coat that fits you well and compare its chest width, body length, center-back sleeve length, shoulder-to-sleeve-end length, and shoulder width with the measurements below.
Our model wears Tagged Size 36. He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. For reference, he normally wears a US/EU size S/36.
The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements. Width is the flat measurement across the garment and represents half of the garment's chest circumference, not the full circumference or the wearer's chest size.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]
Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.
Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, at the seam where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem. The height of the collar is not included.
Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the sleeve opening.
Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam down to the end of the sleeve opening.
Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.
Made in Japan.
- Brand new, in unused condition.
- All measurements are taken by hand with the garment laid flat, using a measuring tape.
- Please note that slight variations in measurements may occur due to individual garment differences and the measuring method.
- Actual color may vary slightly from the photos due to lighting conditions and individual screen settings.
Postwar Work-Coat Design and Unlined Construction
The design is based on classic American work coats from the period following World War II. Its practical pocket arrangement, button-front construction, and longer body retain the character of vintage work clothing while remaining suitable for everyday casual wear.
The coat is made without a lining, allowing the 11 oz. denim to serve as the main garment layer without the added bulk of a separate lining. This makes it suitable as a light outer layer, especially in spring and fall, with its useful wearing season varying according to the layers worn underneath.
11 oz. 100% Cotton Indigo Denim with Gray Weft Yarns
The fabric is an 11 oz. denim made from 100% cotton. Indigo-dyed yarns run lengthwise as the warp, while gray yarns run crosswise as the weft. Small amounts of the gray weft show between the indigo warp yarns, creating fine variations in tone across the face of the cloth.
This interaction between the two yarn colors gives the denim a subtly heathered appearance. The dark indigo remains the dominant color, while the gray visible within the weave adds depth and a softly mottled quality to the surface.
Natural Surface Texture, Moderate Body, and Suppleness
The surface retains small irregularities associated with the yarns and weave, including fine cotton fuzz and uneven tonal variations. Together with the heathered effect of the gray weft, these details produce a textured, rustic appearance associated with vintage workwear.
At 11 oz., the denim is relatively lightweight for a denim work coat. It retains moderate crispness and enough body to support the coat's shape, while also being supple enough to bend and settle with movement. Its character comes from this balance of structure, flexibility, and visible surface texture.
One-Wash Finish and Gradual Fading
The finished garment is washed once during production. This initial wash softens the denim's stiffness and gives it a more broken-in feel from the start, while leaving enough body in the fabric to preserve the coat's shape and workwear character.
Compared with an unwashed garment, substantial initial shrinkage is less likely because the fabric has already undergone a wash. Some further dimensional change may still occur, depending on the washing method, drying conditions, and individual garment. Continued wear and washing gradually soften the denim and develop natural fading and tonal variation in the indigo color.
Five-Button Front with Folded Denim Facings
The front closes with five buttons, including the button at the neckline. The buttons are positioned on the wearer's right front edge, with a corresponding horizontal buttonhole on the wearer's left. At the bottom, the front edges curve gently into the hem, creating rounded lower front corners.
The fabric along the front opening is constructed in two layers to create a double-layered front edge. Stitching runs along the inner edge of the facing from the collar area down to the front hem, securing the double-layered section directly to the body.
This layered construction reinforces the areas around the buttons and buttonholes, which are handled repeatedly when the coat is opened and closed. It also helps limit stretching and distortion along the front opening.
Turn-Down Collar with a Collar Stand
The turn-down collar is attached to a separate collar stand at the neckline. This band raises the base of the collar slightly above the body and supports the fold of the collar, giving the neckline a defined, three-dimensional shape.
Two-Piece Set-In Sleeves
Each sleeve is assembled from two fabric panels and sewn into the corresponding armhole in the body. This set-in construction creates distinct shoulder and armhole seams, while the seams joining the two sleeve panels remain part of the coat's visible construction.
Buttoned Sleeve Openings with Reinforced Slits
Each sleeve has a slit extending upward from its lower opening. The overlapping edges close with one button and one corresponding buttonhole. Unfastening the button allows the opening to spread, making it easier to pass the hand through when putting on or removing the coat.
The edge of the sleeve opening and the edges of the slit are finished with doubled fabric held in place by stitching. Near the upper end of the slit, curved stitching extends outward in gentle arcs to either side.
The top of the opening is also reinforced with several vertical lines of stitching and a horizontal bar tack. These stitches strengthen the area where pulling forces are concentrated as the sleeve opening is spread, helping resist tearing from the upper end of the slit.
Asymmetrical Chest Pockets and a Button-Flap Right Pocket
The chest combines two different pocket designs, an asymmetrical arrangement often called "gacha pockets" in Japanese workwear terminology. On the wearer's right is a patch pocket with rounded lower corners and a covering flap. A vertical buttonhole at the center of the flap fastens over a button attached to the pocket body.
Three-in-One Left Chest Pocket
The patch pocket on the wearer's left chest has rounded lower corners and integrates three storage compartments. Its top-opening section is divided into a narrow pen slot and an adjacent main compartment. An additional panel of the same denim is sewn over the main-pocket area, creating a third compartment between this outer panel and the pocket body.
The third compartment is accessed through a vertical opening at the side. This side opening extends only as far as the position of the Sugar Cane brand label sewn onto the pocket. The limited opening appears intended to help keep small items, such as a pocket watch, from slipping out unintentionally. Together, the two top-entry sections and the side-entry compartment form the pocket's three-in-one arrangement.
The side entry is formed by overlapping fabric layers, with selvage, the finished edge of the woven cloth, used along its inner edge. A size tag is also caught into the lower seam of the left chest pocket. These small construction details contribute to the appearance of traditional work clothing.
Lower Patch Pockets with Interior Reinforcement
Two generously sized, open-top patch pockets are positioned at the lower front, one on each side. Their lower corners are rounded, and their size makes them useful for carrying everyday items.
A reinforcing fabric patch is sewn inside approximately the lower half of each pocket. The stitching securing the upper edge of this reinforcement is visible on the pocket face, allowing the internal construction to appear as a functional stitch line on the exterior.
Bartack Reinforcement at the Pocket Openings
The corners of the front pocket openings are reinforced with bartacks. These compact reinforcing stitches secure points that receive repeated strain as items are placed into or removed from the pockets, strengthening the openings at those localized stress points.
Vintage-Inspired Printed Cloth Label Inside the Right Lower Pocket
A printed cloth label is sewn inside the wearer's right lower front pocket. Its design recalls the guarantee tickets and union labels found on vintage workwear.
Historically, these tickets served different purposes. Some identified the manufacturer or conveyed a manufacturer's quality guarantee, while others indicated that the garment had been made by union members.
On this model, the printed label draws on the visual design of those period garment labels, extending the coat's classic workwear character to the details inside the pocket.
Interior Right Pocket with Visible L-Shaped Stitching
An open-top interior pocket is attached to the inside of the wearer's right front body panel. Its attachment stitching passes through the body and appears on the outside beside and below the right chest pocket, forming an L-shaped line. The visible stitching reveals the relationship between the interior storage and the exterior panel, reflecting the function-led construction of classic workwear.
Branded Metal Tack Buttons
The metal buttons are stamped with "Sugar Cane & Co." and secured to the fabric with tack attachments. The stamped lettering provides a branded detail on the functional hardware used for the front, sleeve openings, and right chest pocket.
Two-Panel Back with a Center Seam
The back is made from two body panels joined along the center back. This vertical seam forms a visible construction line through the middle of the back and continues the straightforward panel arrangement used throughout the coat.
Interior Neck Patch with Visible Attachment Stitching
A cloth patch featuring the "SUGAR CANE & Co." design is sewn directly to the body at the inside back neck. The stitches securing the patch also appear on the upper exterior back, outlining its rectangular shape.
Visible Construction Stitching
Stitching follows the joins between the garment's fabric panels, outlining the coat's construction and the transitions between its components. The pocket reinforcements, interior-pocket attachment, center-back seam, and neck-patch stitching all contribute to an exterior shaped by the way the garment is assembled.
Made in Japan
Sugar Cane model SC15655 is made in Japan. Its gray-weft indigo denim, asymmetrical chest pockets, reinforced sleeve openings, and visible structural stitching bring together the fabric character and practical details associated with classic postwar work coats.
The unlined construction and regular fit retain the straightforward usefulness of the original workwear style, while the one-wash finish gives the denim an approachable feel for everyday wear. With continued use, the fabric gradually softens and develops the individual fading characteristic of indigo denim.
