Studio D'artisan Men's Vintage-Inspired Heavyweight 14 oz. Long-Sleeve Denim Work Shirt, 100% Cotton Right-Hand Twill, One-Wash, Made in Japan (SDA D5335, Dark Indigo)
Studio D'artisan
This men's long-sleeve denim work shirt is made in Japan by Studio D'artisan. Based on the practical construction of classic work shirts, this model combines vintage-inspired details with substantial 14 oz. 100% cotton right-hand twill denim in dark indigo. The one-wash finish softens some of the initial stiffness while preserving the fabric's firm, full-bodied hand. Its construction includes a shirt collar with a separate collar stand, a six-button front, buttoned chest patch pockets with selvedge at the folded openings, a left chest pen opening, cat's-eye buttons, single-button cuffs, a double-layer back yoke, a rounded shirttail hem, and selvedge side gussets with chainstitch runoff. Double-needle felled seams reinforce the major joining areas and contribute to the shirt's workwear appearance.
The balanced regular fit and heavyweight denim allow the shirt to be worn on its own, over a T-shirt as a shirt jacket, or beneath outerwear. Its understated design brings together the rugged texture of heavy denim and the functional details of traditional workwear in a form suited to everyday casual wear.
Size and Fit Guide:
Gender: Men.
The shirt has a balanced regular fit that is neither excessively slim nor overly loose. Its 14 oz. denim has considerably more thickness and substance than ordinary shirting, allowing it to be worn as a conventional button-up shirt or layered over a T-shirt as a shirt jacket. With repeated wear and washing, the denim gradually breaks in and conforms more naturally to the wearer's body.
The set-in sleeves provide defined shoulder and armhole seams, while the rounded shirttail hem sits lower at the center front and back and rises toward the sides. These construction details give the garment the outline of a classic work shirt, with the more substantial presence of heavyweight denim.
Actual fit will depend on your body type, preferred fit, and the thickness of any layers worn underneath. To help select your size, please lay flat and measure a similar heavyweight denim shirt or denim jacket that fits you well, then compare its chest width, body length, center-back sleeve length, shoulder-to-cuff sleeve length, and shoulder width with the measurements below. Please allow for the layers you intend to wear when making this comparison.
Our model wears Tagged Size 38. He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. For reference, he normally wears a US/EU size S/36.
The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements. Width is the flat measurement across the garment and represents half of the garment's chest circumference, not the full circumference or the wearer's chest size.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]
Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.
Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, at the seam where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem. The height of the collar is not included.
Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.
Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam down to the end of the cuff.
Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.
Made in Japan.
- Brand new, in unused condition.
- All measurements are taken by hand with the garment laid flat, using a measuring tape.
- Please note that slight variations in measurements may occur due to individual garment differences and the measuring method.

14 oz. Heavyweight 100% Cotton Right-Hand Twill Denim
The shirt is made from 14 oz. heavyweight denim woven from 100% cotton in a right-hand twill construction. The fabric has greater thickness and weight than typical shirt fabrics, together with a firm, substantial hand. Its body and resistance to bending give the garment a more structured presence than a lightweight denim shirt.
The material combines the substantial feel of heavy denim with the durability associated with workwear fabrics. Its thickness supports the shirt's use as an outer layer over a T-shirt, while the button-front construction also allows it to be worn as a regular long-sleeve shirt or beneath outerwear.
Indigo Warp, Natural-Colored Weft, and Subtle Surface Texture
The denim combines indigo-dyed warp yarns with light, natural-colored weft yarns. The warp yarns run lengthwise through the cloth, while the weft yarns pass across them. Fine glimpses of the lighter weft appear between the darker indigo yarns, producing small variations in tone across the face of the fabric.
Subtle irregularities in the yarns add a restrained unevenness to the surface. Together with the fine speckling created by the contrasting yarn colors, this produces a slightly grainy texture and visual depth within the dark indigo. The effect comes from the yarns and woven structure and contributes to the fabric's rustic workwear character.
One-Wash Finish
The garment is washed once during the finishing process. This initial wash eases some of the pronounced stiffness associated with unwashed denim, giving the fabric a more settled feel from the outset while retaining its firm body and substantial weight.
Because the garment has already been washed, major shrinkage during subsequent laundering is less likely than with an unwashed garment. The finish does not eliminate the possibility of further dimensional changes. As the fabric is 100% cotton, some additional shrinkage or other changes in size may occur depending on washing methods, drying conditions, and differences between individual garments.
Natural Indigo Fading Through Wear and Washing
Continued wear and washing gradually soften the denim and bring out changes in its indigo color. Areas repeatedly exposed to bending and friction, including the collar fold, front plackets, yoke seams, pocket edges, elbows, cuffs, and hem, tend to develop localized fading as the garment is used.
The contrast between these areas and the surrounding denim gives the shirt a progressively more individual appearance. The placement and intensity of the fading depend on the wearer's movements and washing frequency, so the pattern develops differently on each garment.
Regular Shirt Collar with a Separate Collar Stand
The neckline is finished with a conventional turn-down shirt collar attached to a separate collar stand. The stand forms the supporting band at the base of the collar, providing a foundation for the upper collar to fold over.
This construction gives the neckline moderate height and dimension. It supports the collar around the neck and creates the defined collar shape associated with a classic button-front work shirt.
Six-Button Front with Reinforced Plackets
The front opens fully and closes with six buttons, including the button at the neck. The buttons are positioned along the wearer's right front edge. On this side, the body fabric is folded inward to form a double layer that serves as both an integral facing and reinforcement beneath the buttons.
On the wearer's left side, a separately cut strip of matching denim is formed into a double-layer placket and sewn to the body. Vertically oriented buttonholes are worked into this placket to correspond with the six buttons. Both sides therefore have reinforced fabric around the fastening points, although the button side uses the folded body edge and the buttonhole side uses a separately attached placket.
The distance between the first and second buttons is slightly shorter than the spacing between the remaining buttons. This placement helps keep the neck opening relatively contained when only the top button is left undone.
Buttoned Chest Patch Pockets with Selvedge at the Openings
A patch pocket is sewn directly onto the outside of each chest panel. Each pocket has diagonally clipped lower corners, giving its lower outline an angled shape. The upper edge is folded inward to create a double-layer opening and secured with stitching, adding support where the pocket is repeatedly handled.
In keeping with details found on vintage work shirts, the left and right chest pockets are intentionally positioned at slightly different heights. Please note that this subtle difference in height is part of the shirt's design and is not a manufacturing defect.
The edge of the folded fabric incorporates the denim's selvedge, or finished woven edge. This places the selvedge inside the reinforced pocket mouth as a detail of the pocket construction.
A vertically oriented buttonhole is positioned at the center of each pocket opening. It fastens to a button attached to the shirt body behind the pocket, holding the center of the opening closed.
Left Chest Pen Opening and Bartack Reinforcement
The wearer's left chest pocket also includes a horizontally oriented opening worked in the form of a buttonhole at the pocket mouth. This provides a small access point that can be used as a pen slot.
The upper left and right corners of both pocket openings are reinforced with bartacks. These short, concentrated sections of stitching strengthen the corners where pulling forces can accumulate. Together, the doubled pocket mouths and reinforced corners help support the openings during repeated access and use.
Set-In Sleeves with One-Piece Sleeve Panels
The sleeves are sewn into the body's armholes using a set-in construction. Each sleeve is made from a single fabric panel that is joined along its underside to form a tube.
This arrangement creates a defined armhole seam where the sleeve meets the body, together with an underside seam that closes the sleeve itself. It provides the straightforward sleeve construction of a traditional long-sleeve work shirt.
Single-Button Cuffs and Buttoned Sleeve Plackets
Each sleeve ends in a cuff that closes with one button. Above the cuff, the sleeve opening is finished with a separate sleeve placket, also called a gauntlet placket, with an additional button of its own.
Unfastening both the cuff button and the placket button opens the lower sleeve more widely, making it easier to pass the hand through when putting the shirt on or taking it off. The placket also reinforces the edges of the sleeve opening, supporting the fabric around an area that is repeatedly opened and handled.
Cat's-Eye Buttons with Recessed Stitching Channels
Cat's-eye buttons are used throughout the garment. Each button has an elongated recessed channel across the center of its face, creating the distinctive shape that gives this button style its name.
The attachment thread sits within this channel, keeping it from projecting as prominently above the surrounding button surface. This arrangement helps reduce the thread's exposure to rubbing and snagging. The detail combines the recognizable appearance of a traditional workwear button with a practical means of protecting its stitching.
Double-Layer Back Yoke and a Pleat-Free Back
A double-layer denim yoke extends across the upper back. The additional layer reinforces the shoulder and upper-back area, providing support where movement and pulling place stress on the garment.
The back panel below the yoke is constructed without pleats. This leaves a clean, uninterrupted back surface beneath the reinforced upper section and maintains the shirt's straightforward workwear appearance.
Rounded Shirttail Hem
The hem follows a traditional rounded shirttail outline. Both the front and back sit lower at their centers, with the hem curving gradually upward toward the side seams.
When worn untucked, these gentle curves create a natural line around the lower body. The shape preserves the familiar profile of a classic work shirt while allowing the substantial denim to retain a shirt-like outline.
Triangular Selvedge Side Gussets
Small triangular fabric gussets reinforce the hem at the lower end of each side seam. This junction is exposed to pulling from body movement and tension along the hem, so the gussets provide additional support where these forces meet.
By helping distribute stress across the side-seam termination and adjacent hem edges, the gussets reduce the tendency for strain to concentrate at a single point and help limit tearing or fraying. They incorporate the selvedge edge of the denim, repeating the use of this woven edge at the pocket openings. The construction combines practical reinforcement with a detail found on older work shirts.
Double Chainstitch Runoff at the Side Hems
Two chains of stitching extend beyond the fabric at the lower end of each side seam. These are chainstitch runoffs: linked loops of thread formed as the chainstitch sewing continues past the fabric edge.
The thread chains are intentionally left extending from the side seams to reproduce a sewing detail associated with vintage work shirts. Their exposed looped structure records the continuation of the seam beyond the cloth. The length and the way the thread chains lie or gather may vary slightly between individual garments.
Double-Needle Felled Seams at Major Joining Areas
Key construction areas, including the sides, shoulders, armholes, and back yoke, use double-needle felled seams. The fabric edges are folded into the seam and secured with two parallel rows of stitching, enclosing the seam allowances within the joined construction.
This method produces a sturdy connection between the fabric panels in areas that are regularly subjected to stress. The two visible rows of stitching also outline the garment's construction, adding a restrained visual accent that complements the practical character of the work-shirt design.
