Sugar Cane Men's Off-White Chambray Long-Sleeve Work Shirt, 1950s-Inspired American Workwear Design, 100% Cotton, One-Wash, Made in Japan (SC27851 401A Ecru-Toned Off-White)

Sugar Cane

This men's long-sleeve button-up shirt is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Based on the design of 1950s American chambray work shirts, this version uses lightweight 100% cotton chambray in an ecru-toned off-white color instead of the conventional blue chambray commonly associated with this style. The fabric displays subtle weave irregularities, small neps, natural cotton-derived flecks, and linen-like wrinkling, giving it a rustic, lightly textured appearance. Its understated design preserves the practical character of traditional workwear while fitting naturally into a contemporary casual wardrobe. The classic fit provides moderate room through the body without intentionally oversized proportions, allowing the shirt to be worn on its own, open over a T-shirt, or layered beneath a jacket.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

This shirt is cut in a classic work-shirt fit with moderate room through the chest and body. The silhouette is neither overly slim nor intentionally oversized. The waist is not heavily tapered, allowing the body to fall in a relatively straight, natural line from the chest toward the hem. The front and back are finished with a gently rounded shirttail hem, making the shirt suitable for wearing either tucked in or untucked. The lightweight and breathable cotton chambray allows the shirt to be worn on its own, open over a T-shirt or other lightweight top, or layered beneath a jacket. Although it has long sleeves, the lightweight fabric makes it suitable for a wide range of seasons, particularly spring and fall, and the sleeves can be rolled up during warmer weather.

Because fit may vary depending on body type and personal preference, please use the actual garment measurements below as your primary reference. For the most accurate comparison, please measure a similar long-sleeve shirt that fits you well and compare its chest width, body length, sleeve length, and shoulder width with the measurements provided here. All measurements are taken by hand with a measuring tape, so slight variations may occur from one garment to another and depending on the measuring method.

Our model is wearing a tagged size S (14-14 1/2). He stands 5'9" (175 cm) tall, weighs 130 lbs (59 kg), and has a 36-inch (91 cm) chest. He typically wears a US/EU size S (36) in most garments.

The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements.
Please compare them with a similar shirt from your wardrobe to get a better sense of the fit.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3 cm (about 1.2 in.) below the armholes.

Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the back hem.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.

Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam straight down to the end of the cuff.

Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from the outer edge of one shoulder seam to the outer edge of the other.

Fabric Material:
- The shirt is made from lightweight 100% cotton chambray. Off-white yarns are used in both the lengthwise warp and crosswise weft, creating a unified ecru-toned appearance throughout the fabric.

Off-White Chambray Weave and Yarn Character:
- Conventional blue chambray generally combines blue warp yarns with white weft yarns, producing a blue-toned, heathered appearance as the two yarn colors intersect. On this shirt, off-white yarns are used in both directions. This creates a more consistent natural color while preserving the fine woven texture and subtle variations in light and shadow that characterize chambray. The result is a natural, subdued appearance distinct from conventional blue chambray.

Natural Weave Variation, Neps, and Linen-Like Wrinkling:
- The fabric retains the natural character of the yarns, with slight weave irregularities, fine surface undulation, and small variations in texture visible throughout. Rather than forming a completely flat and mechanically uniform surface, the intersecting yarns create subtle differences in height, tension, and shading.

- Fine brown and nearly black flecks originating from the natural cotton are scattered throughout the ecru-colored yarns. Small neps also appear intermittently where irregular or slightly thicker sections of yarn rise above the surrounding weave.

- Although the fabric is made entirely from cotton, its natural creasing and subtle surface wrinkling can recall the appearance of linen. The combination of woven irregularity, cotton-derived flecks, small neps, and linen-like wrinkles gives the cloth a rustic and slightly rough workwear character rather than the smooth appearance of a highly uniform shirting fabric.

- These characteristics are not stains or fabric defects. They are inherent features of the natural ecru cotton yarns and the woven structure of the chambray. The placement, size, and appearance of the flecks and neps may vary slightly between different areas of the fabric and from one garment to another.

Lightweight Fabric with Moderate Firmness and Body:
- The chambray is thin and lightweight, but it is not exceptionally soft, fluid, or strongly draped. The fabric retains moderate firmness, crispness, and body, allowing it to support the outline of a traditional work shirt without the weight or volume of a heavier work-shirt fabric.

- With repeated wear and laundering, the initial firmness gradually relaxes. The cotton fabric becomes more pliable and conforms more naturally to the wearer while retaining the woven character of the chambray.

One-Wash Finish:
- The completed garment has been given a one-wash finish during the final production stage. This treatment relaxes part of the fabric's initial rigidity, so the chambray feels less stiff at the beginning of wear than it would in a completely unwashed state. The process does not eliminate the moderate firmness and body that define the fabric.

- Because the garment has already been washed once during production, the possibility of substantial initial shrinkage after purchase is reduced to some extent compared with an untreated, unwashed cotton shirt. However, the fabric is not shrink-proof. Slight additional dimensional changes may still occur depending on the washing method, water temperature, drying conditions, frequency of laundering, and individual garment variation.

Changes with Wear and Laundering:
- With continued wear and washing, the cotton chambray gradually becomes more pliable, while the natural creasing and definition of the weave become increasingly pronounced. The fabric develops from its original new-garment condition into a surface and hand that conform more naturally to the wearer.

- Fine puckering and subtle wear-related shading may also develop around the seams. As the fabric contracts and relaxes around the stitched areas, the differences in height and shadow between the chambray and sewing lines become more visible, gradually giving the construction greater dimensional definition.

- Because the fabric is ecru-toned off-white, its development differs from the obvious fading normally associated with dark dyed cloth. Changes appear primarily through increased pliability, deeper woven texture, more defined wrinkles, and subtle shadows around the seams. These characteristics allow the off-white chambray to develop its own distinctive appearance through continued wear and laundering.

Collar Construction:
- The neckline is finished with a standard point collar attached to a separate collar stand. The collar stand supports the base of the collar, adding moderate structure and stability around the neckline while helping the collar maintain its shape during wear. This two-piece construction gives the shirt a more traditional button-front work-shirt appearance than an open-collar or camp-collar design.

Front Placket and Button Closure:
- The shirt has a full-open button-front closure for easy dressing and removal. The two front edges are finished with different constructions. On the wearer's left side, a separately cut placket made from doubled matching fabric is sewn onto the front panel. On the wearer's right side, the front edge is folded inward to create a double layer that serves as both an integrated facing and reinforcement.

- Six buttons are arranged along the front, and the corresponding buttonholes are positioned vertically along the opening. The spacing between the top collar button and the second button is slightly narrower than the spacing between the remaining buttons. This arrangement helps prevent the neckline from opening too widely when only the top button is left undone.

Long Set-In Sleeve Construction:
- The shirt features long set-in sleeves. Each shaped sleeve cap is sewn into the corresponding armhole, with the sleeve beginning at the outer end of the shoulder seam. This construction creates a defined shoulder seam and the conventional profile associated with a classic button-front shirt.

Button-Flap Chest Patch Pockets:
- Two patch pockets are sewn directly onto the front body, one on each side of the chest. Each pocket is fitted with a separate buttoned flap. The lower corners of the pocket bodies are gently rounded, softening their outline while retaining the practical appearance of traditional work-shirt pockets.

Pen Slot Detail:
- The left chest-pocket flap includes a buttonhole-style pen slot. This opening allows a pen or similarly shaped small item to be inserted without requiring the entire pocket flap to be opened. The detail reflects the utility-oriented construction of traditional work shirts designed to carry writing instruments and other small work-related items.

Rounded Single-Button Cuffs and Cuff Slits:
- Each sleeve is finished with a single-button cuff. The outer corner of the cuff has a rounded profile, and the cuff buttonhole is positioned horizontally in relation to the sleeve opening. A slit is incorporated into the cuff opening to provide additional room when putting on or removing the shirt and to make it easier to roll up the sleeves.

Off-White Urea Cat's-Eye Buttons:
- Off-white urea cat's-eye buttons are used throughout the shirt and coordinate with the ecru-toned chambray. Each button has an elongated recessed groove across the center, creating the characteristic appearance that gives the cat's-eye button its name.

- The attachment holes and sewing thread sit within this recessed groove. This keeps the thread from protruding prominently above the button face, reduces its direct exposure to friction, abrasion, and snagging during wear, and helps hold the attachment thread in a stable position. The construction is a practical workwear detail designed with both appearance and durability in mind.

Double-Layer Back Yoke:
- The upper back is divided by a subtly curved shoulder yoke panel. The yoke is constructed from two layers of matching chambray, adding strength and dimensional stability across the shoulders and upper back, where the fabric is repeatedly subjected to movement and tension.

Clean Back Construction Without Pleats:
- The back does not include pleats or decorative paneling below the yoke. Instead, the body falls directly and naturally from the lower edge of the back yoke toward the hem. The double-layer yoke reinforces the shoulder area, while the uninterrupted lower back allows the lightweight chambray to retain its natural flexibility and displays the ecru tone, fine weave, intermittent neps, and naturally wrinkled texture across a broad surface.

Rounded Shirttail Hem:
- The hem is cut in a traditional rounded shirttail shape. On both the front and back, the hem curves upward from the center toward the side seams. When the shirt is worn untucked, the gentle curves follow the body and fall more naturally around the waist and hips than a straight, square-cut hem.

Triple-Needle Felled-Seam Construction:
- Triple-needle felled seams are used at major structural areas, including the side seams, shoulders, armholes, back yoke, and sleeves. These areas are repeatedly subjected to movement, pulling, and tension during wear.

- In this construction, the raw fabric edges and seam allowances are folded and enclosed within the seam, then secured with three parallel rows of stitching. Enclosing the cut edges helps control fraying, keeps the seam allowances stable, and reinforces the joined fabric panels. The three stitch rows also distribute stress along the seam.

- The parallel stitch lines remain visible on the exterior, creating the strong, clearly defined seam appearance associated with vintage American work shirts. With repeated wear and laundering, fine puckering and subtle wear marks may develop around these seams, gradually giving the seam construction greater dimensional definition.

Tonal Off-White Stitching:
- Tonal off-white sewing thread is used throughout the shirt and coordinates with the ecru-toned chambray. Small differences in tone between the fabric and thread allow the collar, front placket, chest pockets, back yoke, armholes, and other structural areas to remain subtly visible without disrupting the shirt's calm, natural color.

- The fabric's natural surface irregularity combines with the delicate shadows around the stitching to give the seam construction depth and definition, even though the fabric and thread are closely matched in color.

Interior Sugar Cane Brand Label:
- A Sugar Cane brand label is attached inside the collar. No large brand logo or decorative branding is applied to the exterior, preserving the straightforward appearance of a classic work shirt while keeping the identifying brand element inside the garment.

Overall Design and Construction:
- Based on 1950s American chambray work shirts and made from ecru-toned off-white chambray, this shirt combines the practical construction of vintage-inspired workwear with a natural, subdued color. Although its overall appearance is simple and standard, it incorporates details that reflect the function and manufacturing background of traditional work shirts, including natural weave irregularities and neps, differently constructed left and right front edges, a double-layer back yoke, triple-needle felled seams, button-flap chest pockets, a pen slot, and off-white urea cat's-eye buttons.
