This men's plain crew neck sweatshirt is made in Japan by Buzz Rickson's, Toyo Enterprises' military label specializing in vintage American military-inspired clothing. Its construction draws on mid-century American athletic and military training wear, combining 100% cotton brushed-back sweatshirt fabric with a tubular side-seam-free body, set-in sleeves, an applied V-shaped rib-knit gusset at the front neck, extended rib-knit cuffs and waistband, and four-needle flat-seam stitching at key construction points. Together, these details give the sweatshirt the simple, functional appearance associated with classic American athletic wear, while its simple crew neck design and balanced silhouette allow it to blend naturally into contemporary casual wardrobes.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side approximately 3 cm, or about 1.2 inches, below the armholes.

Length (Body Length): Measured from the center back at the base of the rib-knit neckline, where the neck binding joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the waistband.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the rib-knit neckline, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.

Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam straight down to the end of the cuff.

Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.

Medium-Weight 100% Cotton Brushed-Back Sweatshirt Fabric
The sweatshirt is made from medium-weight 100% cotton brushed-back sweatshirt fabric. It has moderate substance without being either lightweight or exceptionally heavy, while remaining supple and flexible rather than stiff. Fine knitted stitches are visible across the outer surface. Rather than appearing completely uniform or smooth, the fabric shows subtle natural variation in its surface texture and stitch definition, together with the fine surface fuzz of the cotton fibers.

The reverse side has been brushed to raise a fine nap. The brushing does not completely obscure the underlying knitted structure, which remains faintly visible beneath the short raised fibers. This produces a soft interior texture while preserving some of the visual character of the original knit construction.

Tubular Side-Seam-Free Body
The torso uses what is commonly referred to as tubular-knit body construction, with the body knitted as a continuous tube on a circular knitting machine. This differs from conventional cut-and-sewn construction in which separate front and back body panels are joined along the left and right sides.

Because the body forms one continuous tubular section, there are no vertical side seams along either side of the torso. The corresponding seam allowances and overlapping layers of fabric that would normally occur at those locations are also eliminated. This helps prevent localized thickness and ridges from forming along the sides of the body and produces a clean, uninterrupted side profile.

Tubular body construction is a traditional method found in vintage American T-shirts and sweatshirts. On this model, it forms an integral part of the classic athletic-wear construction rather than serving as an applied decorative feature.

One-Wash Finish
The garment is given a one-wash finish during the final production stage. This process gently relaxes the initial firmness of the sweatshirt fabric while retaining an appropriate degree of body. The result is a more supple hand that allows the fabric to begin conforming more readily to the wearer from the outset.

Because the garment has already been washed once during production, the possibility of substantial shrinkage after purchase is reduced compared with an unwashed cotton garment. However, the fabric is a 100% cotton knit, so slight additional dimensional changes may still occur depending on the washing method, drying conditions, and individual garment variation.

With repeated wear and laundering, the cotton fibers will gradually settle and the fabric will develop from its original new-garment texture into a more broken-in surface and hand that conform more naturally to the wearer over time.

Binder-Finished Rib-Knit Crew Neck
The neck opening is based on a classic crew-neck shape and finished with a separate rib-knit binder. The rib-knit binding wraps around the cut edge of the sweatshirt body at the neckline, enclosing it from both the exterior and interior sides.

Unlike a conventional attached rib collar in which only the edge of the rib component is sewn to the body, the binder construction holds the cut neckline edge between the folded layers of rib knit. Two parallel rows of stitching secure the binding in place and reinforce the neckline from both sides.

Because the neck opening is repeatedly stretched when the sweatshirt is pulled over the head, enclosing and reinforcing the cut edge helps limit stretching, waviness, and distortion through normal wear and careful laundering. This construction also helps the crew neck retain a stable, clearly defined shape.

Surface-Applied Front V-Gusset with Four-Needle Flatseam Stitching
A V-shaped gusset is positioned on the front body directly below the crew neck. A separate V-shaped section of rib knit is laid over the exterior surface of the sweatshirt body and attached with four-needle flatseam stitching. This is a surface-applied V-gusset construction rather than an inset gusset fitted into a V-shaped opening cut into the body fabric.

Because the rib-knit component is applied from the outside, it forms a clearly visible V-shaped layer below the neckline while retaining the uninterrupted sweatshirt fabric beneath it. This construction creates the distinctive V detail associated with vintage crew-neck sweatshirts without cutting open the main body panel.

At the lower point of the V, the left and right stitch lines do not simply terminate at matching endpoints. After the flatseam stitching crosses below the point, it continues for a short distance beyond the V. This utilitarian finishing method creates a distinctive sewing detail rather than a completely symmetrical decorative termination and contributes to the practical construction character associated with vintage athletic wear.

Historically, V-gussets are known as details associated with absorbing perspiration around the neckline of athletic sweatshirts. On this model, the surface-applied front V adds a recognizable vintage sweatshirt element to the otherwise straightforward crew-neck design.

Set-In Sleeve Construction
The sweatshirt uses set-in sleeves. Each sleeve is joined to the corresponding armhole at the outer end of the shoulder, creating a clearly defined transition between the body and sleeve.

This differs from raglan construction, in which the sleeve panel extends diagonally toward the neckline. The set-in configuration keeps the sleeve attachment separate from the neck area and produces the natural shoulder outline associated with classic sweatshirt construction.

Extended Double-Layer Rib-Knit Sleeve Cuffs
Each sleeve is finished with a separate rib-knit cuff. The rib-knit component is folded back on itself to create a double-layer structure and is then sewn to the end of the sweatshirt sleeve.

The rib knit has greater elasticity than the main sweatshirt fabric, allowing the cuff to follow the wrist with a moderate degree of tension while accommodating normal arm and hand movement. Its elasticity also helps prevent the sleeve opening from spreading excessively during wear.

The cuffs are proportionally longer than those used on many standard sweatshirts and cover a broader area around the wrist. This reduces open space at the sleeve ends through which cold air can enter while creating the distinctive extended-cuff proportions associated with vintage-inspired athletic wear.

Extended Rib-Knit Waistband
The lower body is finished with a separate extended rib-knit waistband. Like the sleeve cuffs, the waistband is made from a rib-knit component with greater elasticity than the main sweatshirt fabric.

The rib knit follows the waist area with a moderate degree of tension and helps the lower edge of the sweatshirt settle around the waist rather than hanging freely below it. As the lower body is drawn inward by the waistband, the sweatshirt fabric gathers slightly above the rib knit. This creates the softly rounded, cohesive silhouette associated with classic sweatshirt construction.

Four-Needle Flatseamer Construction and Visible Flatseam Stitching
Major component junctions are sewn with a four-needle flatseamer to form comparatively flat seams. In conventional sewing, two fabric sections may be joined in a way that leaves folded or stacked seam allowances on the reverse side. Flatseam construction limits this raised bulk by joining the fabric sections in a flatter configuration.

Reducing ridges and localized thickness at the seams is particularly relevant around the shoulders, sleeve attachments, and undersleeves, where the joined areas frequently contact the body. The flatter seam structure helps create a comparatively smooth interior surface at these locations.

The four-needle flatseamer also produces clearly visible stitching on the exterior of the sweatshirt. These seams follow the component junctions around the shoulders, armholes, sleeves, and lower body, visually defining the transitions between the individual garment sections.

Because the sweatshirt has a plain, unprinted design, the exposed seam construction itself becomes an important part of its appearance. The visible stitching provides subtle definition while producing the straightforward, utilitarian sewing character associated with vintage athletic wear.

Care Instructions
Machine wash at a maximum temperature of 30°C / 86°F using a laundry net and a very gentle cycle.
