Tailor Toyo Men's Sukajan Jacket, Early 1950s Style Reversible Acetate Souvenir Jacket, Eagle x Roaring Tiger Embroidery, Black/Ivory x Blue/Black TT15972-119

Tailor Toyo

This men's reversible embroidered souvenir jacket is made in China and produced by Tailor Toyo, Toyo Enterprises' label specializing in reproductions of vintage Japanese souvenir jackets, commonly known as sukajan. Based on an early-1950s-style Japanese souvenir jacket, this model combines a fully reversible two-face construction with 100% acetate satin on both sides, contrast raglan sleeves, striped rib-knit trim, slanted double-welt pockets, a vintage-style metal zipper, and embroidery that evokes the character of period examples. No batting or insulating fill is placed between the two satin layers, giving the jacket a relatively lightweight profile and allowing the acetate satin to retain its fluid drape. The construction, materials, embroidery character, color blocking, and deliberately vintage-oriented surface appearance reflect the historical souvenir-jacket tradition inherited by Tailor Toyo from Kosho & Co., the predecessor of Toyo Enterprises. Combining authentic vintage-inspired character, bold visual appeal, and practical everyday wearability, the jacket offers a distinctive yet versatile addition to a contemporary casual wardrobe.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

The silhouette is based on vintage Japanese souvenir jackets, with moderate room through the body and a comparatively short body length to create the classic proportions associated with sukajan. The elastic rib-knit waistband gently draws in the waist and hem when worn. Because the jacket uses a lightweight reversible construction without insulating fill, it does not have the pronounced bulk of a padded sukajan. Instead, the supple drape and natural fall of the acetate satin allow the fabric to follow the body more naturally. The sleeves use contrast raglan construction without conventional shoulder seams. They extend diagonally from the neckline toward the underarm, creating a continuous line from the shoulder into the upper arm.

Because fit varies according to body proportions, preferred fit, and the thickness of the clothing worn underneath, please use the actual garment measurements below as the primary sizing reference. For the most useful comparison, we recommend measuring a similar lightweight jacket that fits you well and comparing its dimensions with those listed below.

Our model is wearing a tagged size M. He is 5'11" (180 cm) tall, weighs 150 lbs (68 kg), and has a chest size of 38 inches (96 cm). He normally wears a US/EU size S or 36.

The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements.
Please compare them with a similar jacket from your wardrobe to get a better sense of the fit.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.

Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): Measured from the center back at the base of the collar to the end of the cuff.

Shoulder Width: Not measured. Because this jacket uses raglan sleeves without conventional shoulder seams, a standard shoulder-width measurement cannot be taken. Please use the width, length, and center-back sleeve measurements as the primary references when comparing sizes.

Made in China.

Tailor Toyo and the Japanese Souvenir-Jacket Tradition:
- Souvenir jackets, commonly known in Japan as sukajan, developed after World War II as commemorative garments for American servicemen stationed in Japan. Jackets were embroidered with East Asian motifs such as eagles, tigers, dragons, Mt. Fuji, and cherry blossoms, as well as place names, military-unit references, and other imagery associated with the servicemen's time in Japan.

- Kosho & Co., the predecessor of Toyo Enterprises, was involved in the production and supply of souvenir jackets during the early postwar period and played an important role in the development of this type of garment. Tailor Toyo is Toyo Enterprises' sukajan label and continues the history and tradition associated with those early Japanese souvenir jackets.

Early-1950s-Style Design:
- This model takes its design inspiration from vintage sukajan of the early 1950s. It reproduces characteristic elements found on period examples, including acetate satin fabric, contrast raglan sleeves, striped rib-knit trim, welt pockets, and embroidery intended to evoke the character of vintage souvenir jackets.

- The jacket is fully reversible. The eagle side and tiger side each have their own color arrangement, embroidery, pockets, and sleeve decoration, allowing either side to be worn as the exterior.

100% Acetate Satin on Both Sides:
- Both sides of the jacket are constructed from 100% acetate satin. The fabric has a silk-like luster, but rather than producing a harsh mirror-like shine, its appearance changes subtly according to the viewing angle and the way light falls across the surface.

- The acetate satin is relatively lightweight and supple. Natural wrinkles and drape develop as the fabric moves with the body, giving the jacket the fluid character associated with vintage acetate souvenir jackets.

Vintage-Oriented Fabric Character:
- The satin is finished to reproduce characteristics found on vintage sukajan fabrics, including subtle weave irregularities, natural wrinkles, and slight surface waviness. Fine wrinkles and variations in reflected light may therefore be visible even when the garment is new.

- These characteristics are intentional aspects of the fabric and are intended to reproduce the material character of older acetate souvenir jackets rather than the perfectly uniform surface of modern formal satin.

Unpadded Lightweight Construction:
- This jacket contains no insulating fill. The body is constructed from the two layers of acetate satin that form the reversible sides, with no batting, pile, or other insulating material placed between them.

- As a result, the jacket does not have the thickness or bulk associated with padded sukajan and has a comparatively lightweight feel. It can be worn over a T-shirt, shirt, lightweight sweatshirt, or similar inner layer as a lightweight outer jacket.

Fully Reversible Construction:
- The jacket is designed to be worn from either side. The reverse face is not simply a conventional lining with added embroidery. Each side has its own color arrangement, embroidery, hand pockets, and sleeve decoration.

- Because the colors and motifs differ substantially between the two sides, each face presents a distinctly different appearance while sharing the same underlying jacket construction.

Front Zipper Closure:
- The front uses a full-length zipper closure. The metal zipper pull is engraved with "T.Y.E." and "TOKYO."

- The zipper is constructed for the reversible design so that the jacket can be opened and closed regardless of which side is being worn as the exterior.

Raglan Sleeve Construction:
- The sleeves use raglan construction. Diagonal seams extend from the neckline toward the underarm to join the sleeves to the body.

- This construction eliminates conventional shoulder seams and creates a continuous line from the shoulder into the upper arm. The diagonal raglan seams also emphasize the contrasting sleeve panels and decorative sleeve lines characteristic of sukajan construction.

Striped Rib-Knit Trim:
- The collar, cuffs, and waistband are made from 100% acrylic rib knit. Each rib-knit section is folded into a double-layer construction and attached to the satin body. The elasticity provides a moderate degree of fit around the neck, wrists, and hem.

- Contrasting stripes are knitted into the rib trim and coordinate with the color combinations used on the two reversible satin faces.

Rib-Knit Collar:
- The neckline is finished with a striped rib-knit collar. The elastic knit follows the neck and forms the characteristic neckline associated with classic sukajan.

Rib-Knit Waistband:
- A striped rib-knit waistband is attached around the lower body. Its elasticity gently draws in the hem while retaining moderate room through the body.

Rib-Knit Cuffs:
- Matching striped rib knit is also used at the sleeve cuffs. The elasticity gently reduces the sleeve opening so that the satin sleeves narrow naturally toward the wrists.

Slanted Double-Welt Hand Pockets:
- Both sides of the reversible jacket have slanted hand pockets at the waist. Each pocket opening is finished with contrasting double welts.

- Small triangular reinforcement pieces are attached at the ends of the openings. The combination of narrow welt construction and triangular reinforcement is a characteristic pocket detail found on many vintage sukajan.

Rayon Embroidery:
- The embroidered areas are worked with rayon thread. The characteristic luster of rayon reflects light differently from the acetate satin background, giving the outlines and individual embroidered motifs a degree of visual depth.

- Changes in stitch direction also affect the way light is reflected, allowing areas of the same thread color to appear lighter or darker depending on the viewing angle.

Vintage-Style Embroidery Character:
- The embroidery is designed to reproduce the visual character found on vintage sukajan. Rather than creating completely uniform outlines and stitch density, variations in stitch direction, density, outlines, and overlapping threads contribute to a less mechanically uniform appearance and a softer sense of depth.

- Because the embroidery places localized tension on the lightweight satin, fine wrinkles or puckering may appear around embroidered areas. These characteristics are also part of the vintage-oriented appearance of the jacket.

Eagle Side:
- The front side combines a black body with ivory raglan sleeves. Eagle embroidery is positioned on both sides of the chest, facing toward the center, while the back features a large eagle with its wings spread against a pine-tree motif.

- Script-style "Japan" lettering is embroidered above the back design, recalling the Japanese origin traditionally represented on postwar souvenir jackets.

Eagle-Side Raglan Sleeve Detail:
- The ivory raglan sleeves feature tape-like lines in the same black color as the body. Rope-style piping is inserted along the edges of these lines.

- The combination of contrasting panels and raised rope-style piping reproduces the decorative sleeve treatment seen on vintage sukajan.

Tiger Side:
- The reverse side combines a blue body with black raglan sleeves. Tiger-head embroidery is positioned on both sides of the chest, facing toward the center, while a large tiger motif forms the principal embroidery on the back.

- The blue body and black sleeves create a distinctly different color arrangement from the black-and-ivory eagle side.

Tiger-Side Raglan Sleeve Detail:
- The black raglan sleeves feature tape-like blue contrast lines that coordinate with the blue body.

- Unlike the rope-style piping used on the eagle side, the reverse side relies primarily on the contrasting blue sleeve lines for its decorative treatment.

Overall Construction and Design:
- Tailor Toyo Lot No. TT15972-119 combines a fully reversible 100% acetate satin construction with contrast raglan sleeves, striped acrylic rib-knit trim, slanted double-welt hand pockets, rayon embroidery, and a reversible metal zipper.

- The black-and-ivory side features eagle imagery, while the blue-and-black reverse side features tiger imagery. The different color combinations, embroidery motifs, and sleeve treatments allow the two faces to present distinctly different appearances within the same lightweight, unpadded sukajan construction.

Attention:
- This product is designed to reproduce the material character, sewing, embroidery, and hardware associated with vintage sukajan and should therefore be treated as a delicate garment. Acetate satin is sensitive to friction and snagging, and wear or storage conditions may cause surface abrasion, pulled threads, fading, light-related discoloration, or other changes over time.

- To reproduce the appearance of period sukajan fabrics, the material may show natural weave irregularities, wrinkles, puckering, and slight surface waviness. These characteristics are intentional aspects of the vintage-inspired construction and are not considered defects.

- The embroidery is designed to evoke the appearance of older embroidery techniques and may show variations in stitch width, density, outlines, and exposed thread ends. Take particular care to avoid snagging the embroidery on bags, accessories, hook-and-loop fasteners, sharp objects, and rough surfaces. Do not pull or cut exposed embroidery threads, as doing so may loosen surrounding stitches.

Care Instructions:
- Do not wash.
