TOYS McCOY Men's MA-1 Flight Jacket - Albert Turner Reproduction, Sage Gray Nylon Bomber Jacket, Made in Japan TMJ2533

TOYS McCOY

This men's MA-1 flight jacket is made in Japan by TOYS McCOY, a brand renowned for its vintage-inspired craftsmanship. Part of the TOYS McCOY Military Clothing Collection, this model is a modern reproduction of the U.S. Air Force MA-1 flight jacket, also known as the MA1 bomber jacket or flying jacket, designed in accordance with the MIL-J-8279A military specification. The original jacket that served as the basis for this reproduction was manufactured by Albert Turner & Co., Inc., a respected civilian contractor for the U.S. government. Expertly crafted with TOYS McCOY's signature attention to detail, this piece faithfully captures the historical accuracy and rugged beauty of the original MA-1, while blending seamlessly into today's casual style and balancing vintage authenticity with modern wearability. This jacket is constructed with a 100% nylon outer shell, a 100% nylon lining, and 100% wool-pile insulation. The outer shell features a subdued grayish sage tone, closer to gray than the typical sage green used on later models, reflecting the distinctive color palette of early MIL-J-8279A jackets before the transition to brighter shades. The interior is lined with smooth nylon, while a layer of wool-pile padding is sandwiched between the outer and inner layers to provide insulation, ensuring both warmth and authentic cold-weather performance. This MA-1 jacket features wool-knit ribbing at the collar, cuffs, and waistband, which helps retain warmth while maintaining the classic military silhouette. The front zipper is backed by an internal storm flap reinforced with zigzag stitching, providing both wind resistance and historical authenticity. For practical storage, the jacket includes two slanted snap-closure handwarmer pockets at the waist, a zippered utility pocket with four pen/pencil slots on the left sleeve, and two interior vertical side-entry snap-closure pockets, one on each side. Additional authentic details include a U.S. Air Forces insignia printed on the left sleeve, a rectangular nylon oxygen mask tab positioned along the zipper near the left chest, and two snap-down radio wire tabs located near the underarm area. These hallmark design elements have been faithfully reproduced from the original Albert Turner made MA-1 jackets issued to U.S. Air Force personnel. This item is offered in Japanese (Asian) sizing, which generally runs slightly smaller than standard U.S. and European sizes. For reference, a tagged size Japan M typically corresponds to a U.S./EU size S-M (approximately 36-38 in garment sizing). The jacket provides a comfortable regular fit with a moderately roomy chest, neither too slim nor overly loose, allowing for easy layering with lightweight pieces such as T-shirts or heavier items like sweatshirts. It features a shorter, cropped length that not only reproduces the authentic silhouette of a vintage MA-1 but also minimizes excess fabric and prevents bunching when seated. This model is a brand-new release from TOYS McCOY, combining vintage aesthetics with the brand's signature craftsmanship.

Outer Shell: Crafted from 100% high-density nylon twill in a sage gray tone, the signature color used for second generation MA-1 flight jackets produced under U.S. military specification MIL-J-8279A, this fabric combines durability with a naturally supple hand. It offers an ideal balance of strength, flexibility, and comfort, featuring a smooth texture, rich color depth, and a refined, semi-lustrous finish. This MA-1 bomber jacket is a precise reproduction of an original contract model manufactured by Albert Turner & Co., Inc., one of the officially commissioned civilian contractors for the U.S. Air Force. The color leans closer to gray than the standard sage green seen on later models, accurately reflecting the subdued tones characteristic of early MIL-J-8279A production. The result is a garment that captures the true essence of vintage military design with technical precision and historical authenticity.

Lining (Body and Sleeves): The interior of the jacket, including both the body and sleeves, is fully lined with 100% nylon. This smooth, lightweight lining allows the jacket to glide on and off easily while improving comfort and mobility.

Insulation (Interlining): The insulation consists of a 100% wool pile fill layered between the outer shell and inner lining. This construction provides warmth and heat retention, ensuring reliable cold-weather performance during fall and winter conditions.

Front Closure : The jacket features a front zipper with a zigzag-stitched internal storm flap to block wind penetration. The heavy-duty zipper is reinforced with a cotton Herringbone Twill (HBT) zip tape and is equipped with a horsehide leather pull tab, allowing for easy use even while wearing gloves.

Collar, Cuffs, and Waistband: Made from 100% wool rib knit, these components offer excellent stretch and thermal insulation. The cuffs are specially engineered with a graduated rib knit structure - featuring a finer gauge at the edge and transitioning to a coarser gauge at the base where they meet the nylon shell. This design ensures a snug yet flexible fit that effectively seals out cold air and helps retain body heat, providing reliable warmth and comfort in chilly conditions.

Pockets : Designed for both functionality and comfort, the jacket includes: Two slanted single-welt handwarmer pockets on the front, secured with snap closures and lined with soft double-faced brushed fabric. Two vertical side-entry interior pockets with snap closures, lined with unbleached cotton drill. A utility pocket on the left sleeve with a zipper closure, four pen/pencil slots, and a leather zipper pull tab - perfect for small tools or essentials.

Pattern : Solid color design with authentic U.S. Air Forces insignia printed on the left arm. An additional USAF transfer label appears beneath the manufacturer's tag inside the lining.

Sleeves : Set-in sleeve construction with full-length arms for a traditional military-inspired silhouette.

Label : JACKET, FLYING, MAN'S, INTERMEDIATE TYPE MA-1 SPEC. MIL-J-8279A (USAF) STOCK NO. 8415-273-3970 ORDER NO. AF 33(602)-8077 ALBERT TURNER & CO.,, INC. U.S. PROPERTY.

Additional Details : A rectangular nylon oxygen mask tab is sewn vertically along the front zipper near the left chest. This tab is designed to secure an oxygen mask retainer clip, just as seen on original military flight jackets. In addition, two snap-down radio wire tabs are positioned near the underarm area to manage and secure headset and microphone wiring leads, preventing entanglement during use.

Model name : TOYS McCOY TMJ2533 TYPE MA-1 ALBERT TURNER MIL-J-8279A (A successor model of TMJ2432 and TMJ2331 and TMP2201) / Men's Casual Fashion Reproduction of the MA-1 Flight Jacket by Albert Turner & Co., Inc. / Mens Replica of U.S. Air Force MA1 Bomber Jacket / A modern reissue of the classic MA-1 flying jacket.

About the MA-1 Flight Jacket

The MA-1 flight jacket, also known as the bomber or flying jacket, was developed by the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s as a successor to the B-15 series. Designed for the new jet era, it addressed the operational needs of high-altitude and high-speed flight. Over time, the MA-1 became one of the most recognized and widely used military flight jackets in aviation history.

Throughout its service life, the MA-1 underwent multiple specification updates to improve performance and functionality. The jacket evolved through eight official U.S. military specifications, from MIL-J-8279 through MIL-J-8279G. Each revision reflected technical refinements responding to new aircraft technology, cockpit equipment, and pilot requirements.

Produced continuously from the 1950s through the late 1970s, the MA-1 represented the peak of nylon flight jacket development. Among all flight garments produced worldwide during that era, it stood out for its superior practicality, comfort, and adaptability, becoming the standard-issue jacket for U.S. Air Force pilots. Over nearly three decades of use, the MA-1 evolved in parallel with the rapid advancement of jet fighter design.

The model featured here reproduces the MIL-J-8279A specification, the second version in the MA-1 lineage and the first major revision of the original spec. This version is distinguished by its rectangular inner storm flap and outer shell in a grayish sage tone?both faithfully recreated in this garment. It also bears the authentic name label of Albert Turner & Co., Inc., one of the principal military contractors responsible for manufacturing nylon flight jackets during the Cold War period. Combining technical precision with exceptional Japanese craftsmanship, this reproduction accurately captures the materials, construction, and distinctive appearance of early-production MA-1 jackets - an enduring icon of U.S. Air Force heritage.
