Studio D'artisan Men's Vintage-Inspired Heavyweight 14 oz. Denim Western Long-Sleeve Shirt, 100% Cotton, White Pearl Snaps, One-Wash, Made in Japan (SDA D5571, Dark Indigo)
Studio D'artisan
This men's heavyweight denim western long-sleeve shirt is made in Japan by Studio D'artisan. Based on the design of 1950s western shirts, it combines traditional western-wear details with the substantial thickness and firm body of 14 oz. cotton denim. Its unlined construction features a pointed collar with slightly elongated tips, single-point front yokes, a double-point back yoke, flap-covered chest pockets, white pearl snaps, and triple-snap cuffs with separate sleeve plackets. The dark indigo fabric receives a one-wash finish that eases its initial stiffness while retaining the rugged character of heavyweight denim. A gently shaped slim fit keeps the outline clean without making it excessively tight, allowing the shirt to be worn on its own, open over a T-shirt as a shirt jacket, or beneath outerwear. Its combination of defined western detailing and substantial denim fits naturally into contemporary casual outfits.
Size and Fit Guide:
Gender: Men.
The shirt has a balanced slim fit inspired by vintage western shirts. The body tapers gently from the underarms toward the waist, limiting excess fullness and giving the torso a clean, defined outline. This shaping is subtle: the shirt follows the body while retaining moderate ease, rather than closely emphasizing every contour. The result is a slightly slim silhouette that is neither excessively tight nor loose.
Its 14 oz. denim has considerably more thickness and substance than ordinary shirting. This allows it to be worn as a conventional shirt or layered over a T-shirt as a shirt jacket, as well as beneath a jacket or other outerwear. With repeated wear and washing, the fabric gradually breaks in and conforms more naturally to the wearer's shape and movement.
The actual fit will depend on your body type, preferred amount of ease, and the thickness of any clothing worn underneath. Please measure a similar heavyweight denim shirt or shirt jacket that fits you well, with the garment laid flat, and compare its chest width, body length, center-back sleeve length, shoulder-seam sleeve length, and shoulder width with the measurements below.
Our model wears Tagged Size 38. He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. For reference, he normally wears a US/EU size S/36.
The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements. Width is the flat measurement across the garment and represents half of the garment's chest circumference, not the full circumference or the wearer's chest size.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]
Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.
Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, at the seam where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem. The height of the collar is not included.
Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.
Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam down to the end of the cuff.
Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.
Made in Japan.
- Brand new, in unused condition.
- All measurements are taken by hand with the garment laid flat, using a measuring tape.
- Please note that slight variations in measurements may occur due to individual garment differences and the measuring method.
- Actual color may vary slightly from the photos due to lighting conditions and individual screen settings.
14 oz. Heavyweight 100% Cotton Denim
The shirt is made from 14 oz. heavyweight denim woven from 100% cotton. Compared with ordinary shirting, the fabric has considerably more thickness and weight, along with a firm, substantial hand. The body and sleeves are unlined, so the garment's substance comes from the denim itself rather than from an added lining.
Indigo-dyed warp yarns are combined with weft yarns in a natural, undyed tone. Fine irregularities in the yarns give the surface a subtly uneven texture, while small glimpses of the lighter weft create delicate flecks of tonal contrast within the dark indigo face.
The combination of slight surface coarseness, natural yarn variation, and contrast between the warp and weft gives the denim a rustic depth. Its substantial body adds a rugged character to the otherwise sharply defined western-shirt design and provides enough weight for the shirt to be worn open over a T-shirt.
One-Wash Finish
The shirt is washed once as part of the finishing process. This initial wash eases the pronounced stiffness associated with unwashed denim while preserving the fabric's underlying firmness and body. The result is a moderately broken-in feel from the first wear without losing the substantial character of the 14 oz. cloth.
Because the garment has already been washed, substantial initial shrinkage is less likely than with an unwashed equivalent. However, the one-wash finish does not eliminate all subsequent dimensional change. The 100% cotton fabric may still change slightly in size depending on washing methods, drying conditions, and differences between individual garments.
Natural Indigo Fading and Gradual Break-In
With repeated wear and washing, the denim gradually settles into the wearer's shape and movement, while the indigo develops natural changes in tone. Fading becomes more apparent in areas exposed to repeated bending or friction, including the collar fold, front placket, yoke seams, pocket edges, elbows, cuffs, and hem.
Raised edges, folds, and frequently flexed areas encounter different amounts of contact during use. This leads to localized variations in color rather than a completely uniform change across the garment. The placement and intensity of fading depend on the wearer's movements, frequency of wear, and washing habits, allowing each shirt to develop its own appearance over time.
Pointed Turn-Down Collar with a Separate Collar Stand
The neckline uses a turn-down collar attached to a separate collar stand. The stand forms the supporting band between the body and the folding collar, giving the neckline a defined, three-dimensional shape.
The collar tips are slightly elongated and sharply angled. Their pointed outline complements the western yokes and pocket flaps, giving the upper front the clean, angular appearance characteristic of a traditional western shirt.
Six-Point Front Closure with a Four-Hole Top Button and Five Snaps
The front opens fully and fastens at six points: one conventional button at the neck and five snap fasteners below it. The top button has four holes and is sewn to the garment with thread. It passes through a corresponding buttonhole to close the neckline.
The remaining five fasteners use a snap mechanism, closing when their two halves are pressed together and opening when they are pulled apart. This combination of a sewn button at the neck and snaps down the body follows a classic western-shirt arrangement.
Separate Left Front Placket and Folded Right Front Facing
The two front edges use different methods of construction. On the wearer's left, a separately cut placket made from the same denim is attached to the body in a double-layer construction. On the wearer's right, the front edge is folded inward to form a double layer that serves as both a facing and reinforcement.
These doubled areas provide additional fabric thickness at the snap attachment points and support the front edges during repeated opening and closing. The inner edge of the right front facing incorporates the denim's selvedge, retaining the woven fabric edge in an area that is largely concealed when the shirt is worn.
Pointed Chest Patch Pockets with Subtle Height Variation
Two patch pockets are sewn directly onto the outside of the front body, one on each side of the chest. Following a detail found on vintage shirts, the pockets are intentionally positioned at slightly different heights. This subtle offset is part of the design and is not a manufacturing defect.
Each pocket has a five-sided outline with a point at the center of its lower edge. The pocket opening is folded inward to form a double layer and secured with stitching, reinforcing the edge used when reaching into the pocket. The folded section incorporates the denim's selvedge, which remains visible inside the pocket.
Each pocket is covered by a flap whose gently curved lower edges meet at a single central point. A single snap holds the flap closed, coordinating with the pointed pocket body and the shape of the western yokes.
Bar tacks reinforce both upper corners of each pocket, strengthening the attachment points where repeated use can place stress on the stitching. A small brand label is attached near the upper edge of the flap on the wearer's left chest pocket.
Double-Layer Single-Point Front Yokes and a Double-Point Back Yoke
The front shoulders have separate western yokes on the left and right, each ending in a single downward V-shaped point. Across the back, a double-point yoke has two downward-facing points, one on each side.
At the center back, the lower edge of the yoke rises gently before curving down toward the two points. This combination of curves and pointed ends forms the distinctive rear design. Both the front and back yokes use two layers of fabric, reinforcing the shoulder area while also creating the shirt's characteristic western styling.
Clean Back Construction without Pleats
The back body has no pleats below the yoke. This keeps the area beneath the shaped yoke visually clean, allowing its curved lower edge and the denim's natural surface texture to remain the principal features of the back.
One-Piece Set-In Sleeves
The long sleeves use a set-in construction, with each sleeve sewn into the corresponding armhole in the body. Each sleeve is formed from a single fabric panel joined along the underside to create a tube. This establishes distinct shoulder and armhole seams while keeping the sleeve itself to a straightforward one-piece construction.
Triple-Snap Cuffs with Separate Sleeve Plackets
Each cuff has three snaps arranged in a vertical row along the length of the sleeve. Above the cuff, the sleeve opening is finished with a separate placket, known as a kenboro in Japanese shirt construction. Each placket also has its own single snap fastener.
Opening both the cuff snaps and the placket snap widens the lower sleeve opening, making it easier to pass the hand through when putting the shirt on or taking it off. The placket reinforces the edges of the sleeve opening and visually continues the line of the triple-snap cuff, creating a coordinated western-style sleeve finish.
Metal-Rimmed White Pearl Snap Fasteners
The five front fasteners below the top button, the chest pockets, the cuffs, and the sleeve plackets all use round snaps with metal rims surrounding white pearl decorative faces. Their restrained luster contrasts with the dark indigo denim and complements the pointed yokes and pocket flaps.
The white pearl faces show slight individual differences in color, luster, and pattern. These variations give the buttons subtly different appearances while preserving the consistent round shape and metal-rimmed finish used throughout the shirt.
Gently Curved Shirttail Hem
The lower edge has a rounded shirttail shape on both the front and back. Each hem sits lower at the center and rises gently toward the side seams, creating a natural curved line around the hips when the shirt is worn untucked.
The fabric edge is narrowly turned inward and secured with stitching. This folded finish follows the curved outline and defines the bottom edge without adding a separate hem band.
Two-Needle Flat-Felled Seams and Contrast Stitching
Major joining areas, including the sides, shoulders, and armholes, use two-needle flat-felled seams. The fabric edges are folded together and secured with two rows of stitching, enclosing the seam allowances within the folded joint. This creates a sturdy connection between the denim panels.
The parallel stitch lines remain visible on the exterior. Additional contrast stitching around areas such as the collar, front placket, yokes, and pockets outlines the individual components and makes the construction stand out against the dark denim.
Interior Brand Label
A STUDIO D'ARTISAN brand label is sewn inside the back of the neckline. This complements the smaller exterior label at the left chest pocket flap.
Made in Japan
This shirt is made in Japan. Its pointed collar, shaped double-layer yokes, flap-covered pockets, and triple-snap cuffs retain the character of classic western clothing, while the heavyweight denim gives the garment a substantial, rugged feel.
The gently shaped slim silhouette and unlined construction allow it to work as a standalone shirt, a shirt jacket over a T-shirt, or a layer beneath outerwear. Together, these features bring the appearance of vintage western wear into everyday casual dressing.
Care Instructions
Machine wash on a gentle cycle at a maximum water temperature of 40°C (104°F).
Do not use chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach.
