Sugar Cane Men's Vintage-Inspired Long-Sleeve Denim Western Shirt, Approx. 8 oz. 100% Cotton, Snap Front, One-Wash, Made in Japan (SC28190, 421A Dark Indigo)

Sugar Cane

This men's long-sleeve denim Western shirt is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Based on Western shirt designs from the 1950s and 1960s, it combines traditional Western construction with the rugged texture of dark indigo denim. The approximately 8 oz. 100% cotton fabric has moderate substance, a subtly uneven surface, and a supple feel, with a one-wash finish that reduces its initial stiffness while retaining the body characteristic of denim. The construction incorporates a pointed collar with a separate collar stand, a full snap-front opening, single-point front yokes, a triple-point back yoke, angled chest pockets with pointed flaps, three-snap cuffs, and a curved shirttail hem. Genuine shell inserts in the metal-rimmed snaps and vintage-style labeling add subtle detail to the dark indigo denim. A balanced regular fit with very subtle shaping through the waist makes the shirt suitable for wearing on its own, open over a T-shirt, or beneath a jacket, bringing its classic Western and workwear character into contemporary casual outfits.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

The shirt has a balanced regular fit that is neither particularly slim nor oversized. The body provides a moderate amount of room, with the side seams narrowing very slightly from below the underarms toward the waist. This shaping is restrained, allowing the body to fall naturally while retaining a lightly defined outline. The fit maintains comfortable space through the torso without closely emphasizing the contours of the body.

The curved front and back shirttails rise gradually toward the sides, giving the lower body a rounded outline when the shirt is worn untucked. Together with the moderate substance and flexibility of the denim, these proportions accommodate both standalone wear and casual layering.

Because fit may vary depending on body type and personal preference, please use the actual garment measurements below as your primary reference. For the most useful comparison, please measure a similar denim shirt or woven long-sleeve shirt that fits you well and compare its chest width, body length, center-back sleeve length, shoulder-seam sleeve length, and shoulder width with the measurements listed below.

Our model wears Tagged Size M (15). He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. For reference, he normally wears a US/EU size S/36.

The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements. Width is the measurement across the garment when laid flat, representing half the chest rather than the full chest circumference. All measurements are taken by hand, so slight variations may occur between individual garments and depending on the measuring method.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.

Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, at the seam where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem. The collar height is not included in this measurement.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.

Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam down to the end of the cuff.

Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from the outer edge of one shoulder seam to the outer edge of the other.

Made in Japan.

1950s and 1960s Western Shirt Design
The design draws on vintage Western shirts from the 1950s and 1960s, bringing together pointed shoulder yokes, snap closures, shaped pocket flaps, and a rounded shirttail. These elements establish the shirt's Western character, while the indigo denim and practical construction details give it the rugged appearance associated with traditional American work clothing.

The approximately 8 oz. fabric provides enough substance for the shirt to be worn as a main upper layer while remaining manageable beneath outerwear. The regular fit and restrained waist shaping preserve a natural outline, making the design adaptable to everyday casual wear without an excessively close or oversized silhouette.

Approx. 8 oz. 100% Cotton Indigo Denim
The shirt is made from approximately 8 oz. dark indigo denim woven from 100% cotton. Indigo-dyed warp yarns run lengthwise through the fabric, while undyed weft yarns run across its width. Small glimpses of the lighter weft appear through the dark outer surface, contributing to the visual depth of the cloth.

The surface also retains fine, natural irregularities in the yarns. These subtle variations combine with the visible undyed weft to create a lightly grainy texture and a rustic appearance. The denim has the understated unevenness of a woven cotton fabric, with small changes in texture and tone visible across the surface.

At approximately 8 oz., the fabric has moderate thickness and substance for a denim shirt. It retains the firmness and body characteristic of denim while remaining supple enough to bend and follow movement without excessive stiffness. This balance gives the shirt a defined appearance when worn on its own and the flexibility needed for wearing over a T-shirt or beneath a jacket.

One-Wash Garment Finish
The shirt is washed once during the finishing process. This initial wash reduces some of the stiffness of the newly made fabric while preserving an appropriate amount of body, allowing the denim to feel more settled and easier to wear from the outset.

Because the garment has already undergone an initial wash during production, it is less prone to substantial initial shrinkage than an otherwise comparable unwashed garment. The finish does not prevent all later dimensional changes. As the fabric is 100% cotton, some additional shrinkage or other changes in measurements may occur depending on subsequent washing methods, drying conditions, and individual garment differences.

Indigo Fading Through Wear and Washing
With repeated wear and washing, the denim gradually becomes more accustomed to movement, and the indigo develops natural variations in shade. Changes tend to appear around areas that repeatedly fold, bend, or receive friction, including the collar fold, front placket, yoke seams, pocket edges, elbows, cuffs, and hem.

The location and intensity of these changes depend on how the shirt is worn and how frequently it is washed. As a result, the fading develops differently from one garment to another, gradually giving the denim a more individual appearance through use.

Pointed Shirt Collar with a Separate Collar Stand
The neckline uses a conventional shirt collar supported by a separate collar stand. The stand forms the base of the collar and supports the turn-down section above it, giving the neckline a defined, three-dimensional shape.

The collar tips are relatively narrow and sharply pointed, reflecting the character of a classic Western shirt. Their length remains moderate, allowing the pointed shape to complement the front yokes and snap closure without creating an exaggerated long-point profile.

Eight-Snap Front with Different Left and Right Placket Constructions
The front opens fully and closes with eight snap fasteners. The two front edges are constructed differently: the wearer's left front has a separately cut placket made from a double layer of the same denim, while the wearer's right front is turned inward to create a doubled section that serves as both a facing and reinforcement.

These doubled fabric sections support the closure along the front opening. On the left, the applied placket forms a distinct component sewn onto the body. On the right, the folded-back body fabric provides the reinforced edge. Together, the two constructions give the snap-front opening the fabric support needed where the shirt is repeatedly fastened and unfastened.

Three-Snap Cuffs with Snap-Fastened Sleeve Plackets
Each cuff has three snap fasteners arranged in a vertical row, creating the characteristic multi-snap cuff treatment of a Western shirt. Above the cuff, the sleeve opening is finished with a tower-style sleeve placket, which has an additional single snap fastener of its own.

Opening the cuff snaps and the sleeve-placket snap releases both parts of the opening, allowing it to spread wider so the hand can pass through more easily when putting on or removing the shirt. The construction combines a practical sleeve opening with the distinctive arrangement of fasteners associated with traditional Western clothing.

Double-Layer Single-Point Front Yokes and Triple-Point Back Yoke
Each side of the front shoulder area has a V-shaped, single-point yoke. Across the back, a yoke connects the two shoulder areas and forms a triple-point lower outline, with one point at the center and an additional point on either side.

Both the front and back yokes are made by layering matching denim over the body fabric. This creates a double-layer construction around the shoulders, adding reinforcement while giving the upper body the defined panel shapes characteristic of a Western shirt. The outlines of the layered pieces make the yoke construction a prominent part of the shirt's appearance.

Angled Chest Patch Pockets with Single-Point Snap Flaps
Two patch pockets are positioned on the chest, with their upper lines angling upward from the center-front side toward the outer sides of the body. Each pocket is covered by a flap whose lower edge forms a single point at the center. A snap fastener secures each flap over the pocket opening.

The angled pocket arrangement and pointed flaps continue the visual direction established by the Western yokes. Their shapes contribute to the shirt's front design while retaining the straightforward storage function of externally applied patch pockets.

Pen Slot in the Left Chest Pocket Flap
The left chest pocket flap has a buttonhole-like slit that serves as a pen opening. This allows a pen to pass through the flap and into the pocket while the flap remains snapped closed.

The opening provides access to the pocket for this specific purpose without requiring the entire flap to be lifted. It is a practical detail drawn from vintage work-shirt construction and adds a workwear element to the Western pocket design.

Genuine Shell Snap Faces Set in Metal Rims
The snap fasteners have decorative faces made from genuine shell set inside metal rims. The metal surrounds and defines the edge of each shell insert, combining a clearly outlined fastener shape with the natural luster of the shell surface.

Because the inserts are cut from natural shells, their color, sheen, and markings vary slightly from one piece to another. These individual differences are part of the material's appearance and give each fastener its own subtle surface character.

Unpleated Back Below the Yoke
The back is constructed without added pleats beneath the yoke. The fabric below the yoke therefore presents a flat, uncluttered appearance, maintaining a clean outline across the upper back and allowing the pointed shape of the yoke to remain clearly defined.

Gently Curved Shirttail Hem
The front and back hem lines each curve gently upward from the center toward the side seams. This creates the rounded shirttail shape traditionally associated with Western shirts and work shirts.

When the shirt is worn untucked, these curved edges give the lower body a naturally rounded outline around the hips. The gradual rise toward the sides carries the shape of the front and back shirttails into the side seams and contributes to the shirt's balanced appearance.

Double-Needle Flat-Felled Seams at Major Joining Areas
Major joining areas, including the sides, shoulders, and armholes, use double-needle flat-felled construction. The seam allowances are folded together and enclosed within the seam, then secured with two parallel rows of stitching. This creates a contained fabric junction suited to areas that receive stress as the garment moves with the wearer.

The enclosed allowances form part of the structural connection between the adjoining panels. The two parallel stitch lines are also visible at these seams, tracing the garment's construction and making the working stitchwork an exterior detail in its own right.

Vintage-Style Printed Cloth Ticket Inside the Front Placket
A printed cloth label is sewn near the hem on the underside of the wearer's left front placket. Its design recalls the guarantee tickets and union tickets found on vintage garments, adding a period-inspired detail to the inside of the shirt.

Historically, labels of these types appeared on American workwear and were used to communicate manufacturer or product quality guarantees, or an association with organized labor. On this shirt, the ticket recreates the character of vintage garment trim and forms part of the design's attention to historical details.

Woven Sugar Cane Western Wear Neck Label
A woven brand label is sewn inside the back neckline. It incorporates the wording "Sugar Cane & Co." and "Western Wear" together with Western-themed imagery. The lettering and motifs are woven into the label, providing a distinct finishing detail at the inside of the collar.

Its design complements the pointed yokes, shell-faced snaps, and vintage-style cloth ticket, carrying the Western and workwear references through to the garment's labeling.

Made in Japan
Sugar Cane model SC28190 is made in Japan. Its approximately 8 oz. cotton denim combines a naturally textured indigo surface with moderate substance and flexibility, while the one-wash finish gives the fabric a more settled feel from the beginning.

The collar stand, reinforced snap-front edges, layered Western yokes, functional chest pockets, multi-snap cuffs, and double-needle flat-felled seams bring together the structural and visual details described throughout the shirt. Finished with a regular fit and gently curved shirttails, it retains the character of vintage Western and work clothing while remaining suitable for everyday wear on its own or as part of a layered outfit.
