TOYS McCOY

Available Colors

This men's long-sleeve crew neck sweatshirt is made in Japan by TOYS McCOY and is based on the functional construction and proportions of early 20th-century American athletic wear and vintage sweatshirts. It is constructed from substantial 14.8-ounce extra-heavyweight 100% cotton sweatshirt fabric with a brushed interior and features a tubular side-seam-free body, a binder-finished crew neck, double-layer V-gussets at both the front and back neckline, long set-in sleeves, extended rib-knit cuffs and waistband, and four-needle flatseam construction. Contrasting rib-knit sections are used at the neckline, V-gussets, cuffs, and bottom hem to create a classic two-tone appearance, while the exposed flatseam stitching emphasizes the garment's construction and adds subtle visual definition. With no printed graphics or embroidery, the sweatshirt relies on its heavyweight fabric, traditional construction, rib proportions, and stitching details to create an authentic vintage-inspired character. At the same time, its clean design and balanced proportions make it easy to incorporate into contemporary casual outfits, whether worn on its own or layered under a jacket or coat.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

This item uses Japanese tagged sizing. Because the proportions may differ from typical U.S./EU sizing, please use the actual garment measurements below as your primary reference when selecting a size.

This sweatshirt is cut in a classic fit inspired by early American athletic wear and vintage crew neck sweatshirts. It has moderate room through the chest and body, combined with a relatively short body length. The shoulders are not cut excessively wide, and the set-in sleeve construction allows the sweatshirt to sit naturally around the shoulders while maintaining comfortable room through the chest and torso. The overall fit is not intentionally oversized or excessively loose.

The body falls naturally from the chest toward the waist without pronounced tapering. At the bottom, the wide, extended rib-knit waistband gently draws the sweatshirt in around the waist. This allows a small amount of the heavyweight body fabric to gather naturally above the waistband, creating the softly rounded silhouette associated with classic vintage sweatshirts. The extended rib-knit cuffs provide a secure, comfortable fit around the wrists and help control the volume of the sleeves.

The substantial 14.8-ounce extra-heavyweight fabric has enough thickness and body to help the sweatshirt maintain its shape rather than draping loosely against the body. This gives the garment a substantial vintage-inspired appearance while keeping the overall silhouette balanced and controlled. The relatively short body length also works well for classic layering, helping prevent the sweatshirt hem from extending too far below many jackets and coats.

Please note that this garment is supplied in an unwashed condition. After the first wash, slight shrinkage may occur, primarily in the body length rather than the width. The measurements listed below are taken before washing and should be considered when selecting your size.

Because fit may vary depending on body type and personal preference, please use the actual garment measurements below as your primary reference. For the most accurate comparison, we recommend measuring a similar sweatshirt that fits you well. All measurements are taken by hand with a measuring tape, so slight variations may occur between individual garments and depending on the measuring method.

The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements.
Please compare them with a similar sweatshirt from your wardrobe to get a better sense of the fit.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3 cm (about 1.2 in.) below the armholes.

Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.

Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam straight down to the end of the cuff.

Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from the outer edge of one shoulder seam to the outer edge of the other.

14.8 oz. Extra-Heavyweight Cotton Sweatshirt Fabric:

- The main body is constructed from 14.8-ounce sweatshirt fabric made from 100% cotton. Compared with ordinary lightweight or medium-weight sweatshirt materials, this fabric has substantially greater thickness, weight, and body. Its dense construction gives the garment a firm, substantial hand while retaining the inherent flexibility of knitted cotton fabric.

- The surface shows fine knitted texture and natural tonal and textural variation rather than an excessively smooth or mechanically uniform finish. This restrained irregularity gives the fabric a straightforward, rugged appearance that is consistent with the character of vintage American athletic wear.

- The fabric has noticeable thickness with moderate firmness and resilience. Because it is a knitted textile, however, it remains flexible enough to move naturally with the body. With repeated wear and careful laundering, the cotton fibers gradually relax and the fabric becomes increasingly comfortable while retaining its substantial heavyweight character.

Brushed-Back Interior:

- The reverse side of the sweatshirt fabric is brushed to raise the cotton fibers and create a soft, fuzzy interior surface. This differs from an unbrushed loopback or French-terry sweatshirt fabric, where the looped yarn structure remains clearly visible on the inside.

- The raised fibers create a soft layer that can hold small pockets of air within the fabric. Combined with the substantial 14.8-ounce body, this brushed-back construction helps retain warmth and gives the sweatshirt a noticeably more insulated and substantial feel than a lighter, unbrushed sweatshirt.

- The brushed interior also provides a soft hand against the body. As the garment is worn and carefully washed over time, the cotton fibers gradually settle and soften, allowing the interior to develop a more naturally broken-in feel.

Tubular-Knit Body Construction:

- The torso is knitted as a continuous tube on a circular knitting machine, creating what is commonly referred to as a tubular body. Unlike a conventional sweatshirt constructed from separate front and back body panels joined together along the sides, this construction eliminates vertical side seams from both sides of the torso.

- Removing the side seams also eliminates the corresponding seam allowances, reducing localized thickness and raised areas along the sides of the body. This is particularly beneficial with a substantial 14.8-ounce fabric, where conventional overlapping seam allowances could otherwise create noticeable bulk.

- The uninterrupted tubular structure allows the knitted fabric to continue naturally around the torso and gives the exterior a clean side profile without visible vertical seam lines. Tubular body construction is also associated with many vintage American T-shirts and sweatshirts and contributes directly to the garment's classic athletic-wear character.

Unwashed Finish:

- The completed sweatshirt is supplied in an unwashed condition and has not undergone a final factory wash. In its new state, the cotton fibers and knitted stitches have not yet fully settled through exposure to water and drying, giving the fabric a comparatively firm, dry, and substantial hand.

- During the first wash, the cotton fibers absorb moisture and relax. As the garment dries, the fibers and knitted structure settle more closely together, causing the fabric to become slightly denser and more cohesive.

- This change is a normal characteristic of an unwashed 100% cotton sweatshirt. With repeated careful wear and laundering, the initial firmness gradually softens and the fabric develops a more naturally broken-in texture while retaining the weight and body of the original material.

Shrinkage Characteristics:

- Because this sweatshirt is made from unwashed 100% cotton fabric, slight dimensional change may occur after the first wash. Under gentle laundering conditions, shrinkage is more likely to appear in the vertical direction, particularly in the body length, than across the body width.

- The expected lengthwise shrinkage is slight rather than dramatic. The body width generally remains comparatively stable, although actual results may vary according to the individual garment and laundering conditions.

- Water temperature, washing duration, agitation, spin intensity, and drying method can all affect the amount of shrinkage. Warm or hot water and tumble drying may increase contraction and can produce greater or less predictable dimensional changes.

- To help control shrinkage, hand wash the garment gently, avoid aggressive mechanical action, reshape it after washing, and allow it to dry naturally in the shade.

Crew Neck and Binder-Neck Construction:

- The neckline is based on a traditional crew neck and uses a separate rib-knit binder construction. Rather than simply attaching a rib collar to the cut edge of the sweatshirt body, the binder wraps around and encloses the raw edge of the body fabric.

- The body fabric is held between the rib-knit layers and secured with double stitching. This construction reinforces the neckline from both the exterior and interior sides and creates a more stable finished edge around an area that is repeatedly stretched each time the sweatshirt is pulled over the head.

- By enclosing and reinforcing the body-fabric edge, the binder construction helps reduce excessive stretching, waviness, twisting, and shape distortion around the neck opening through repeated wear and laundering.

- The separate rib also gives the neckline a clearly defined visual structure and works proportionally with the substantial 14.8-ounce body fabric.

Front and Back Double V-Gussets:

- V-shaped gussets are positioned directly below both the front and rear portions of the crew neck, creating a classic double-V configuration. Unlike a sweatshirt with only a front V-gusset, this construction incorporates a corresponding gusset below the back neckline as well.

- Each gusset is constructed from a separate V-shaped section of rib knit folded into a double-layer structure and physically inserted into the body. It is therefore an actual structural fabric component rather than a decorative V-shaped stitch pattern applied to the surface.

- The gussets reinforce the transition between the neckline and body while creating one of the most recognizable construction details associated with vintage American athletic sweatshirts.

- Historically, this type of V-gusset is associated with athletic sweatshirts as a sweat-absorbing detail positioned below the neckline. It can also help distribute stress around the lower portion of the neck opening when the garment is pulled over the head or subjected to repeated upper-body movement.

- At the junction between each V-gusset and the body, the stitching is intentionally not terminated symmetrically at the point of the V. Instead, one side of the flatseam continues downward beyond the tip for a short distance along the body fabric.

- This extended stitching creates a distinctive asymmetric finishing line rather than a mechanically matched left-and-right termination. The detail contributes to the straightforward, utilitarian sewing character associated with vintage athletic garments and gives the gusset area a deliberately less uniform, more period-inspired appearance.

Set-In Sleeve Construction:

- The sweatshirt uses conventional long set-in sleeves. Each shaped sleeve cap is sewn into the corresponding armhole, with the sleeve beginning at the outer end of the shoulder seam.

- Unlike raglan construction, where the sleeve panel extends diagonally toward the neckline, the set-in configuration clearly separates the shoulder and sleeve into individual pattern sections.

- This construction produces the defined shoulder arrangement traditionally associated with classic crew neck sweatshirts while allowing the sleeve to fall naturally from the shoulder into the arm.

Extended Rib-Knit Sleeve Cuffs:

- Each sleeve is finished with a separate rib-knit cuff. The rib is folded to create a double-layer structure, providing greater thickness, resilience, and dimensional stability than a single-layer rib edge.

- The rib knit has greater elasticity than the main sweatshirt body, allowing the cuff to fit naturally around the wrist while accommodating normal arm and hand movement. Its elasticity also helps prevent the sleeve opening from spreading excessively during wear.

- The cuffs are intentionally longer than those found on many contemporary sweatshirts. This extended proportion is characteristic of vintage-inspired athletic sweatshirts and creates a visually distinctive transition between the sleeve body and wrist.

- In practical terms, the longer rib covers a greater portion of the wrist and helps reduce open space at the sleeve end through which cold air can enter. Together with the substantial brushed-back body fabric, this contributes to the overall warmth of the garment.

Extended Rib-Knit Waistband:

- The lower body is finished with a separate wide rib-knit waistband similar in construction to the sleeve cuffs. The rib forms a continuous elastic band around the lower torso and has greater stretch and recovery than the main sweatshirt fabric.

- The waistband gently draws in the lower edge of the body rather than allowing the substantial sweatshirt fabric to fall completely straight to the bottom. This creates the softly rounded, slightly gathered shape traditionally associated with classic heavyweight sweatshirts.

- Like the cuffs, the waistband is intentionally deeper than the narrow rib bands commonly used on many modern sweatshirts. Its extended vertical dimension contributes strongly to the garment's vintage-inspired proportions.

- The wide elastic rib also helps stabilize the position of the lower hem during wear and provides a closer fit around the waist, reducing the amount of cold air that can enter from the bottom of the garment.

Four-Needle Flatseamer Construction:

- Major component seams are sewn with a four-needle flatseamer, producing flatlock-style seams designed to keep the joined areas comparatively flat.

- In conventional sewing, two fabric sections may be placed together and stitched in a way that leaves folded or stacked seam allowances on the reverse side. With flatseam construction, the joined area is finished with considerably less raised bulk, reducing pronounced ridges along the inside of the garment.

- This is particularly relevant with a substantial 14.8-ounce sweatshirt fabric. Because the body material itself is already thick, controlling additional thickness at the seams helps prevent shoulder, armhole, neckline, cuff, waistband, and gusset areas from becoming unnecessarily bulky.

- The flatter seam structure reduces localized ridges and thickness where the garment contacts the body, helping provide a smoother interior feel despite the substantial weight of the fabric.

Visible Flatseam Stitching:

- The four-needle flatseamer also produces clearly visible stitch lines on the exterior of the garment. These lines follow the major component junctions and visibly define areas such as the shoulders, armholes, neckline, V-gussets, cuffs, and waistband.

- The stitching therefore serves both a structural and visual purpose. Functionally, it forms part of the flat seam construction. Visually, it outlines the individual garment sections and emphasizes how the sweatshirt is assembled.

- Because the sweatshirt does not rely on printed graphics or embroidery for decoration, these exposed construction lines become an important part of its appearance. The stitching adds subtle visual definition while allowing the actual sewing and pattern construction to remain visible from the exterior.

Two-Tone Body and Rib Construction:

- The sweatshirt uses a two-tone construction in which the main body is contrasted with a different color at the crew neck, front and back V-gussets, sleeve cuffs, and bottom waistband.

- Rather than using printed artwork, patches, or decorative appliques, the color contrast is created directly through the garment's functional components. This makes the neckline, gussets, cuffs, and waistband visually distinct from the main body while preserving the clean appearance of a plain sweatshirt.

- The contrast between the main sweatshirt fabric and rib-knit components also creates subtle variation in both color and surface texture. Together with the exposed flatseam stitching, the two-tone arrangement allows the actual construction of the garment to function as part of its visual design.

Relationship Between Fabric Weight and Construction:

- The substantial 14.8-ounce fabric is an important part of the sweatshirt's overall structure. Its thickness and firmness provide enough body to support the binder neckline, inset V-gussets, extended cuffs, wide waistband, and visible flatseam construction without allowing these details to visually overpower the garment.

- At the same time, the flatseam construction controls unnecessary thickness at the component junctions. This balance between heavyweight fabric and relatively flat seam construction allows the sweatshirt to maintain a robust, substantial character while limiting excessive bulk at the areas where multiple components meet.

Vintage Athletic-Wear Construction:

- The tubular body, binder-finished crew neck, front and back V-gussets, long set-in sleeves, extended rib-knit cuffs and waistband, and four-needle flatseam construction are all integral parts of the garment rather than decorative references applied after assembly.

- Together, these details reproduce the straightforward, functional character associated with classic American athletic sweatshirts while allowing the construction itself to remain clearly visible.

- TOYS McCOY expresses the vintage influence of the sweatshirt primarily through fabric weight, pattern proportions, knitted components, seam construction, and finishing details rather than relying on graphic decoration.

Fabric Development Through Wear:

- As the unwashed cotton fabric is worn and carefully laundered, the fibers gradually relax and the knitted structure settles. The initially firm hand becomes more flexible, while the material retains the substantial weight and body characteristic of the 14.8-ounce fabric.

- The exterior develops a more naturally broken-in texture, and the brushed interior gradually conforms to repeated wear. These changes are normal characteristics of heavyweight cotton knitwear and allow the sweatshirt to develop a more personal feel over time.

Overall Construction and Design:

- This sweatshirt combines 14.8-ounce extra-heavyweight brushed-back 100% cotton fabric with a tubular side-seam-free body, binder-finished crew neck, front and back double-layer V-gussets, long set-in sleeves, extended double-layer rib-knit cuffs and waistband, and four-needle flatseam construction.

- The two-tone arrangement of the body and rib-knit components, together with the visible flatseam stitching, gives the garment visual definition without relying on printed graphics or embroidery.

- The result is a substantial plain crew neck sweatshirt that expresses the functional construction and rugged character of vintage American athletic wear while remaining straightforward and versatile enough for contemporary casual styling.

Care Instructions:

- Hand wash only. Do not machine wash.
- Do not use chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Avoid strong mechanical spin drying. Reshape the garment after washing and allow it to dry naturally in the shade.
- Iron at a low temperature with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the garment.
- Do not dry clean.

Important Information About the Unwashed Finish:

- This garment is made from unwashed 100% cotton sweatshirt fabric. Slight dimensional change may occur during the first and subsequent washings as the cotton fibers absorb moisture and the knitted structure settles.

- Under gentle laundering conditions, shrinkage is more likely to occur in the body length than in the width. The expected change is slight, but actual results may vary according to the individual garment and laundering method.

- Warm or hot water, aggressive washing, strong mechanical action, and tumble drying can increase shrinkage and may cause greater or less predictable dimensional changes. To help minimize shrinkage, wash gently by hand and dry naturally in the shade.

- After washing, reshape the garment before drying. Continued careful laundering and wear will gradually soften the cotton fibers and allow the heavyweight fabric to develop a more naturally broken-in hand.
