This men's Type MA-1 flight jacket is made in Japan by Buzz Rickson's, Toyo Enterprises' military label specializing in reproductions and interpretations of vintage American military clothing. The jacket reproduces an early U.S. Air Force Type MA-1 made to the MIL-J-8279 specification and is based on an ALBERT TURNER & CO., INC. contractor configuration from the mid-1950s. Its defining construction combines a gray-cast Sage Green 2/2 heavy nylon twill shell, matching sage-toned nylon lining, a densely filled wool-and-cotton pile interlining, a square-ended wind flap, early equipment tabs and communication-cord loops, flapless exterior pockets, wool knit trim, and period-style U.S. Air Force markings. The substantial pile interlining adds thickness and structure through the body and sleeves, giving the jacket the full, rounded, and weighty silhouette characteristic of an early MA-1.

The jacket has a classic, full-bodied MA-1 flight-jacket fit, with generous room through the chest and body, substantial volume through the sleeves, and a relatively short body length. A 100% wool rib-knit waistband at the hem draws the lower body inward around the waist. Combined with the roomy upper body and the thickness created by the wool-and-cotton pile interlining, this gives the jacket the rounded, compact silhouette associated with early MA-1 flight jackets. Compared with an uninsulated light-zone jacket such as an L-2, the BR14900 has greater overall bulk and a more substantial three-dimensional shape through the body and sleeves.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.

Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.

Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam straight down to the end of the cuff.

Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from the outer edge of one shoulder seam to the outer edge of the other.

Historical Background of the Type MA-1
The Type MA-1 developed from the Type B-15 family of intermediate-zone flight jackets and entered U.S. military aviation service during the 1950s. From the original MIL-J-8279 specification through MIL-J-8279A, MIL-J-8279B, MIL-J-8279C, MIL-J-8279D, MIL-J-8279E, MIL-J-8279F, and MIL-J-8279G, the design was progressively revised in response to changes in jet aircraft, oxygen equipment, communication systems, emergency-visibility requirements, and other aspects of the flight environment.

Although the basic MA-1 silhouette remained recognizable throughout this development, individual specifications differed in technically important details. These included the shape of the wind flap behind the front zipper, the presence or removal of equipment attachment tabs and communication-cord loops, lining configuration, pocket construction, reversible features, and other interior and exterior components.

For this reason, MA-1 jackets from different specification periods may appear broadly similar at first glance while differing substantially in their equipment interfaces and internal construction. One of the clearest examples is the wind flap: the original MIL-J-8279 pattern used a square-ended upper section, while the subsequent MIL-J-8279A revision changed this area to a rounded form.

The immediate design predecessor to the MA-1 was the modified B-15D. Earlier B-15-series jackets used a large mouton collar, but the modified B-15D replaced it with a low-profile knitted collar. That lower knitted configuration was carried forward into the Type MA-1. The MA-1 therefore was not a collarless jacket; instead, it standardized a compact rib-knit collar as part of the flight-jacket structure.

ALBERT TURNER & CO., INC. MIL-J-8279 First-Pattern Reproduction
BR14900 is a Japanese-made Buzz Rickson's reproduction based on an early Type MA-1 manufactured for the U.S. Air Force under the MIL-J-8279 specification by ALBERT TURNER & CO., INC. The design source belongs to the mid-1950s first-pattern MA-1 configuration.

The reproduction incorporates the characteristic construction associated with this early specification, including a gray-cast Sage Green heavy nylon twill shell, wool-and-cotton pile interlining, square-ended wind flap, nylon oxygen-mask tab, snap-fastened ICS communication-cord loops, flapless exterior pockets, left-sleeve utility pocket, and period-style U.S. Air Force markings.

These details identify the jacket as an early MIL-J-8279 configuration rather than one of the later MA-1 revisions that incorporated different equipment interfaces, pocket arrangements, or lining systems.

100% Nylon Heavy Nylon Twill Outer Shell
The outer shell is constructed from 100% nylon heavy nylon twill. The fabric is densely woven and has a comparatively smooth, compact surface.

Compared with thinner nylon fabrics that can feel dry, crisp, or relatively rigid, this heavy nylon twill has greater substance, thickness, and flexibility. The fabric retains enough body to support the rounded form of the jacket while remaining sufficiently supple to move with the wearer.

The surface is not highly glossy. Instead, the filament nylon develops a restrained sheen that becomes more or less visible depending on the direction of the light, viewing angle, and the folds formed in the shell. Highlights and shadows therefore shift across the fabric as the jacket moves.

The color is Sage Green with a noticeable gray cast rather than a strongly yellow, olive, or brown-toned green. This gray-sage appearance is one of the most visually characteristic elements of the early MA-1 shell.

100% Nylon Full Lining
The body and sleeves are fully lined in 100% nylon. The lining has a smoother surface than the heavily structured outer shell and is used throughout the interior from the body into the sleeves.

Its relatively slick surface reduces friction between the jacket and underlying garments. This allows the sleeves and body to move more freely over shirts, sweatshirts, or other inner layers and reduces catching or resistance when the jacket is put on, removed, or moved through the shoulders and arms.

58% Wool / 42% Cotton Pile Interlining
Between the outer shell and nylon lining is an undyed natural-color pile interlining composed of 58% wool and 42% cotton. This is not simply loose batting inserted between two fabric layers. It is a pile-type interlining in which the cotton forms the supporting structure and the wool forms the insulating pile.

The interlining extends through the body and sleeves and creates a continuous insulating layer within the jacket. The wool pile traps air within the garment structure, contributing to the thermal function associated with the MA-1's intermediate-zone role.

The thickness of this interlining also has a direct effect on the physical form of the jacket. It gives the torso and sleeves greater depth and volume, helping create the rounded, three-dimensional silhouette characteristic of an insulated MA-1 rather than the flatter profile of an uninsulated light-zone jacket.

Reproduction CROWN Aluminum Front Zipper
The front closure uses a reproduction CROWN aluminum zipper.

A horsehide leather pull tab is attached to the metal slider pull. The leather tab increases the gripping area, making the zipper easier to grasp and operate with bare hands or while gloves are worn.

Square-Ended Insulated Wind Flap
A vertical wind flap, also referred to as a storm flap, is positioned directly behind the front zipper on the wearer's right side. It follows the zipper opening from the lower front body toward the neckline.

Its purpose is to form an additional internal barrier behind the zipper and reduce the amount of cold air that can pass through the front closure into the interior of the jacket.

On the MIL-J-8279 first pattern, the upper end of this wind flap is square rather than rounded. This square-ended shape is one of the visible construction details that distinguishes the early MIL-J-8279 pattern from the subsequent MIL-J-8279A revision.

The flap contains insulating material and is secured with visible zigzag stitching. The zigzag stitch pattern helps stabilize the interlining inside the flap and reduces internal shifting or bunching within the narrow component.

Flapless Slanted Exterior Pockets
Two slanted exterior pockets are positioned at the lower front body. Each opening is constructed as a single-welt pocket and is secured with a snap fastener.

Unlike later MA-1 versions, the openings are not covered by separate exterior pocket flaps. This flapless pocket arrangement is a characteristic feature of the early MIL-J-8279 configuration.

The pocket bags use a brushed double-face wool-and-rayon fabric. The brushed interior surface gives the pocketing a distinctly different hand from the surrounding nylon shell and lining.

Snap-Fastened Cotton-Drill Interior Pockets
Vertical-entry interior pockets are positioned inside the left and right front panels. Each pocket closes with a snap fastener.

The pocket bags are made from cotton drill. Drill is a firmly woven cotton twill with greater structure than the surrounding nylon lining, making it suitable as a separate pocketing material for supporting stored items inside the garment.

Left-Sleeve Utility Pocket and Four Pen Slots
A zippered utility pocket is positioned on the upper left sleeve. This type of sleeve pocket is also commonly referred to as a cigarette pocket and became one of the most recognizable functional details of U.S. military nylon flight jackets.

The main storage compartment is opened and closed with a CROWN zipper matching the basic construction of the front closure. A horsehide leather pull tab is attached to the slider for easier handling.

The outer face of the utility pocket contains four individually divided pen slots. Each writing instrument is held in a separate narrow channel rather than in one undivided compartment.

This arrangement keeps pens or pencils vertically organized on the sleeve and reproduces the functional storage configuration associated with original military flight clothing.

Printed U.S. Air Force Wing-and-Star Sleeve Marking
Above the left-sleeve utility pocket is a marking combining the U.S. Air Force wing-and-star emblem with the words "U.S. AIR FORCE."

The marking is not applied as a separately embroidered or sewn-on patch. Instead, it is printed directly onto the nylon outer shell, integrating the insignia with the surface of the sleeve.

Nylon Oxygen-Mask Tab
A vertical nylon oxygen-mask tab is positioned on the left front body beside the main zipper.

On the original flight jacket, this tab functioned as an equipment attachment point associated with the retaining hardware for the oxygen-mask system. It is therefore a functional aviation-equipment detail rather than a decorative chest tab.

Its presence is particularly relevant to the early MA-1 configuration, before changes in oxygen equipment and flight gear altered the need for this type of attachment point.

Snap-Fastened ICS Communication-Cord Loops
Snap-fastened ICS communication-cord loops are positioned at the sides of the body.

On the original jacket, these loops were used to retain and organize wiring associated with the aircraft's intercommunication system, including headset and microphone leads. Their purpose was to help control loose cables around the wearer rather than allowing the wiring to hang freely around the torso.

Together with the oxygen-mask tab, the ICS cord loops are important equipment-related details of the early MA-1 specification and reflect the relationship between the jacket and the flight equipment used during that period.

100% Wool Rib-Knit Collar
The neckline is finished with a rib-knit collar made from 100% wool. The low-profile knitted construction follows the neck closely while retaining flexibility and stretch.

The rib structure reduces open space around the neckline and helps limit air entering through the collar opening while still allowing movement through the neck and shoulders.

This knitted collar is one of the defining construction changes that separates the MA-1 and the modified B-15D from earlier B-15 jackets with large mouton collars.

Graduated-Knit 100% Wool Rib Cuffs
The sleeve ends are finished with 100% wool rib-knit cuffs. The knit construction changes progressively from the point where the cuff joins the nylon sleeve toward the wrist opening.

The cuff transitions from a comparatively looser, lower-density knit near the sleeve seam to a finer, denser knit toward the wrist. This creates a controlled reduction in circumference rather than an abrupt transition from the full nylon sleeve to the wrist opening.

The elastic rib structure holds the cuff around the wrist, helps reduce air entering through the sleeve opening, and stabilizes the position of the sleeve during wear.

100% Wool Rib-Knit Waistband
The lower edge of the jacket is finished with a 100% wool rib-knit waistband. The elastic knit draws the relatively roomy lower body inward around the waist.

This creates a controlled transition from the full chest and torso to the narrower hem opening. Combined with the comparatively short body length, substantial sleeve volume, and pile interlining, the waistband plays an important role in forming the rounded MA-1 silhouette.

Rather than hanging straight from the chest to the hem, the body gathers slightly above the rib-knit waistband, producing the compact, curved lower-body profile associated with the flight-jacket pattern.

Military-Pattern Brass Snap Fasteners
Brass snap fasteners are used at the exterior pockets, interior pockets, and ICS communication-cord loops.

The hardware is produced to reproduce the form and appearance of military-specification components used on period flight clothing. Their use maintains the functional snap-fastened construction of the original design while also reproducing the visual character of the early hardware.

Reproduction ALBERT TURNER & CO., INC. Contractor Label
A reproduction contractor label is sewn inside the back neck. The label follows the format used on military-issued flight garments rather than functioning simply as a conventional commercial brand label.

The reproduced wording includes "JACKET, FLYING, MAN'S INTERMEDIATE," "TYPE MA-1," "SPEC. MIL-J-8279," "ORDER NO. AF-33-(602)-6409," and "ALBERT TURNER & CO., INC."

These markings identify the garment designation, type, military specification, contract order, and original contractor represented by the reproduction.

Interior U.S. Air Force Marking
Directly below the contractor label, a U.S. Air Force wing-and-star emblem and "U.S. AIR FORCE" lettering are applied directly to the nylon lining.

This marking is positioned inside the back neck and is normally concealed while the jacket is worn. Its placement reproduces an interior identification detail associated with the early MA-1 configuration.
