Sugar Cane Men's 14oz. Hawaiian Indigo Sugarcane Fiber Selvedge Denim Jeans Classic Regular Straight Button Fly (SC40401 One-Wash)
Sugar Cane
This pair of men's jeans is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a workwear-focused label from Toyo Enterprises known for its vintage-inspired craftsmanship. Built around a classic five-pocket design, this model is made from 14 oz. right-hand twill denim woven from yarns blended with sugarcane fiber and cotton, and dyed with Hawaiian indigo. Developed through the brand's original fabric-making methods, the denim has a rugged, uneven surface texture and a slightly bluer cast than standard indigo denim. Finished with Sugar Cane's signature attention to detail throughout, it balances vintage-style construction with everyday wearability, blending heritage-inspired character with a look that fits naturally into a contemporary casual wardrobe. The fabric is a 14 oz. right-hand twill denim made from a 50/50 blend of sugarcane fiber and cotton. The warp yarns are dyed with Hawaiian indigo, while the weft yarns remain undyed, and the fabric is woven on traditional shuttle looms. A distinctive feature of the Hawaiian indigo used in this denim is its slightly bluish tone, which gives the fabric a somewhat bluer cast than more standard indigo denim. As the undyed weft subtly shows through the indigo-dyed warp, the surface develops gentle mottling and fine speckling rather than a flat, overly uniform appearance. The denim also shows visible nep, irregular yarn thickness, and fine fibers across the surface, giving it a slightly hairy texture and a distinctly natural look. Rather than appearing smooth or overly refined, the material has a rugged, uneven character that reflects the qualities of the blended fibers and reinforces its vintage-inspired appeal. The jeans have been given a one-wash treatment to help reduce, though not completely eliminate, shrinkage while providing a more comfortable feel from the start. They also display a natural vintage-style leg twist along both the outseam and inseam. Additional heritage details include selvedge construction visible along the outseam when the hem is cuffed, as well as inside the coin pocket. These jeans also incorporate distinctive Hawaiian-inspired details, including a hair-on-hide patch with a branded turtle motif on the right side of the back waistband, referencing the turtle as a sacred messenger in Hawaiian culture. Other features include decorative sashiko stitching on the right back pocket, original printed fabric used for the front pocket bags, printed reinforcing cloth attached to the reverse side of both back patch pockets, five belt loops, and riveted reinforcement at key stress points for added durability. These jeans have a classic regular straight fit with a button fly, a slightly higher mid-rise, and a balanced straight leg. The silhouette is neither too slim nor too loose, giving them a classic and easy-to-wear shape. As a new release from Sugar Cane, this pair stands out for its original Sugarcane Fiber Denim, classic regular straight fit, and distinctive Hawaiian-inspired details, offering a unique blend of heritage character and everyday wearability.

Any apparent difference between the approximate size reference above and the actual garment measurements below is mainly due to the rise and the way the garment is cut from the hips up to the top of the waistband.
[How We Measure the Actual Garment]
The garment is laid flat, face up, and measured by hand with a measuring tape.
Waist: Measure straight across the top of the waistband from side to side, then double that measurement to get the full waist size.
Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam down to the bottom of the leg along the inside seam.
Front Rise: Measure straight from the crotch seam, where the inseams meet, up to the top edge of the front waistband.
Thigh: Measure the width of the leg about 3 cm (approximately 1.2") below the crotch seam, straight across from one side to the other.
Leg Opening: Measure straight across the bottom hem of one leg, from one side to the other. This measurement represents the leg opening width.
Please note: the waist measurement shown in the table should be used only as a general reference and should not be taken as a direct equivalent of your usual tagged waist size, as the fit may vary depending on the rise, overall cut, and where you prefer to wear the pants.
Please also note that vintage-inspired pants made in Japan may fit smaller in the waist than some customers expect from general international sizing, due to the way they are designed and made to preserve a more traditional vintage character, including the rise, overall pattern, construction, and fabric character.
Please note: the actual waist measurement tends to be smaller than the tagged size due to the nature of the fabric and the one-wash treatment. The waist may stretch slightly with wear, but if you prefer a little more room in the waist from the start, you may wish to consider one size up.

Overall Product Character:
- This model is produced in Japan by Sugar Cane, a workwear-focused label under Toyo Enterprises, and is constructed based on a traditional five-pocket jeans design. It incorporates the brand’s proprietary Sugar Cane Fiber Denim and combines historically informed construction methods with distinctive material development. The overall design reflects a balance between vintage workwear reference and practical modern wearability.
Fabric Construction:
- The fabric is a 14 oz. right-hand twill denim made from a 50/50 blend of cotton and sugar cane fiber (bagasse). The warp yarns are dyed with Hawaiian indigo, while the weft yarns remain undyed, creating a standard denim structure with indigo-dyed warp and natural weft. The fabric is woven on traditional shuttle looms, resulting in a tightly controlled but character-rich weave with selvedge edges.
Material Characteristics:
- Due to the blended yarn composition and the characteristics of the sugar cane fiber, the surface exhibits visible nep, irregular yarn thickness, and fine protruding fibers. This produces a slightly hairy texture and a non-uniform surface appearance. The weft showing through the warp creates subtle mottling and fine speckling, giving the fabric depth and variation rather than a flat or overly even finish.
Color and Dyeing:
- The warp yarns are dyed with Hawaiian indigo, which produces a slightly bluish tone compared to standard indigo dyeing. This results in a subtly bluer cast across the fabric. The contrast between the indigo-dyed warp and undyed weft enhances the visual texture and contributes to the fabric’s dimensional color expression.
Finish and Post-Treatment:
- The jeans are finished with a one-wash treatment. This process removes a portion of the initial shrinkage and softens the fabric slightly, while still preserving the original texture and structure of the denim. Residual shrinkage may still occur with further washing, but at a reduced level compared to unwashed denim.
Leg Twist (Twisting Leg Phenomenon):
- Due to the use of traditional shuttle-loom weaving and right-hand twill construction, the jeans exhibit a natural leg twist over time. This twisting occurs along both the outseam and inseam and is a characteristic feature of vintage-style denim construction.
Selvedge Construction:
- The outseam is constructed using selvedge denim, with the self-finished edge visible when the hem is cuffed. The selvedge detail is also applied inside the coin pocket. This construction method reflects traditional denim manufacturing techniques and contributes to both durability and authenticity.
Front Construction (Button Fly):
- The jeans feature a traditional button-fly front with a total of five metal buttons, including the top waistband button. Each button is finished with an antique treatment and engraved with the Sugar Cane brand logo. This five-button configuration reinforces the vintage-style construction of the jeans while also contributing to their functional durability and period-correct appearance.
Pocket Configuration and Reinforcement:
- The jeans follow a traditional five-pocket layout consisting of two front pockets, one coin pocket positioned inside the right front pocket, and two rear patch pockets. This arrangement is based on classic workwear jeans construction, designed for both practicality and durability.
- The front pockets are cut with a curved opening for ease of access, and are reinforced with exposed metal rivets at key stress points, including the upper corners and pocket entry base. The coin pocket is also secured with rivets and features selvedge detailing along the opening edge, reflecting traditional manufacturing methods.
- The back pockets are symmetrically positioned and constructed as patch pockets with a slightly angular, workwear-oriented shape. The upper corners of both back pockets are reinforced with hidden rivets on the reverse side, providing additional strength while maintaining a clean exterior appearance.
Front Pocket Bag Construction:
- The front pocket bags are constructed from original printed pocketing fabric, adding a distinctive interior detail. The back pocket reinforcement -cloth also uses printed fabric, extending this design continuity to unseen internal areas.
Back Pocket Construction:
- Both back patch pockets are reinforced on the reverse side with an additional backing cloth printed with original artwork. The upper corners are further secured with hidden rivets placed on the inside. Together, these hidden construction details improve structural stability and durability in the pocket area, especially under repeated stress, while maintaining a clean exterior appearance consistent with vintage workwear specifications.
Decorative Details (Sashiko):
- The right back pocket features decorative sashiko stitching applied by hand. This creates a contrast between the functional reinforcement structure and the visible design element, adding a handcrafted visual accent.
Waist and Patch:
- The waistband is equipped with five belt loops and a hair-on-hide leather patch positioned on the right rear side. The patch is branded with a turtle motif, referencing the turtle as a sacred messenger in Hawaiian culture. The use of hair-on-hide material adds texture and visual depth compared to standard leather patches.
Fit and Silhouette:
- The jeans are designed with a regular straight fit, featuring a mid-rise waist and a straight leg from thigh to hem. The silhouette is balanced, neither slim nor wide, providing a traditional proportion consistent with mid-century denim patterns. This construction allows for ease of movement while maintaining a clean, structured outline.
Design Positioning:
- As a new release from Sugar Cane, this model integrates the brand’s original fabric development with vintage-based construction details and Hawaiian-influenced design elements. The result is a technically distinctive pair of jeans that combines material innovation with historically grounded workwear design.

- Please wash separately, as excess dye may bleed during the first several washes.
