Tailor Toyo
This embroidered cotton jacket is made in China and produced by Tailor Toyo, a heritage brand under Toyo Enterprises renowned for its souvenir jackets (sukajan). This model is part of Tailor Toyo's souvenir garment collection and is a modern revival of the iconic Vietnam Jacket - commonly known as a "Viet-Jumper" or "Viet-Jacket." These jackets were originally custom-ordered by American soldiers stationed in Vietnam during the 1960s and 1970s, who commissioned local tailors to create unique souvenir pieces as mementos of their service. Meticulously crafted with Tailor Toyo's hallmark attention to detail and historical authenticity, this piece reflects the style and appeal of vintage Vietnam souvenir jackets. It captures the retro, nostalgic charm of classic styles rooted in the heritage of souvenir jacket culture, while seamlessly integrating into today's casual style for a timeless look. The jacket features a two-layer construction: the outer shell is made from lightweight, soft 100% cotton twill, while the lining is crafted from lightweight 100% acetate satin. Key details include a front zipper closure, a shirt-style turn-down collar, two waist pockets, and antique coin-style single-button cuffs with sleeve plackets. Partial elastic bands at both sides of the hem provide a comfortable fit. The custom embroidery is created using vintage-style techniques that resemble hand stitching, with designs depicting Cam Ranh Bay, where the soldier was stationed, as it appeared during the Vietnam War. There is no filling or padding, making this a lightweight outerwear piece suitable for wearing on slightly chilly days or during seasonal transitions. This product is offered in US/EU sizes and features a regular fit that is neither too slim nor too loose, paired with a shorter overall length. The shorter length is intentionally designed to evoke a classic, vintage-inspired look and to prevent excess fabric from bunching up when seated. This item is a brand-new, original creation from Tailor Toyo. It combines vintage-inspired design with Tailor Toyo's quality craftsmanship.
This jacket is a modern reproduction of a rare, custom-made piece originally commissioned by an American serviceman stationed at the port of Cam Ranh, in southern Vietnam, during the mid-1960s. Unlike the majority of surviving "Viet-Jackets" (Vietnam souvenir jackets), which typically feature map embroidery on the back, this model is distinguished by a stylized embroidered panther head - an uncommon and highly sought-after design. Additional embroidery details include a landscape scene representing Vietnam on the right chest and the Chinese characters "福禄寿" (Fukurokuju, symbols of fortune, prosperity, and longevity) on the left chest - where most vintage examples typically display only the character "福" (fortune). The dragons embroidered on both sleeves are also notably larger than those found on standard Viet-Jackets from the same era. This piece has been carefully reproduced based on a rare vintage original, with close attention to period-accurate detailing.

History of the Vietnam Tour Jacket
Military tour jackets, also known as souvenir jackets, were originally made by local tailors in areas where U.S. servicemen were stationed or visited while on leave during wartime. These jackets became popular among off-duty soldiers, who had them custom-sewn as keepsakes to commemorate their time in service.
Vietnam Tour Jackets were often commissioned by U.S. soldiers stationed in Vietnam as personal mementos of their military service. These jackets served as reminders of the time spent overseas, the camaraderie among troops, and the hardships they endured. Many featured patriotic or humorous slogans that reflected the soldiers' emotions. In some cases, unit or division names were embroidered to further personalize the jacket.
Similar to the Sukajan (Japanese souvenir jacket) from the post-World War II occupation era in Japan, the Vietnam Tour Jacket became a cultural symbol of military service abroad. More than just a souvenir, it represented pride, survival, and personal expression. Soldiers wore these jackets both during their deployment and after returning home?sometimes as a badge of honor, other times as a form of protest against the war.
Because of its strong association with the Vietnam War, the jacket also became part of anti-war movements and counterculture fashion in the 1970s. Today, the Vietnam Tour Jacket is not just a piece of clothing?it is a historical artifact, a symbol of military service, and a lasting fashion statement that continues to influence vintage military and streetwear fashion. Whether valued for its historical significance or style appeal, this jacket remains a powerful representation of a pivotal era in both American and Vietnamese history.
