Please note that slight variations may occur due to manual measurement. Fit may also vary depending on the rise, waist position, overall cut, fabric character, and individual preference. Available sizes: 30, 32, 34, 36, and 38.

[Approximate Size Reference]

The size information below is intended only as an approximate general guide. Because the fit of shorts and pants can vary depending on the rise, overall cut, and where you prefer to wear the waistband, the following should be used only as a rough point of reference and not as an exact size conversion.

Tagged Size 30: Approx. usual waist size 30"
Tagged Size 32: Approx. usual waist size 32"
Tagged Size 34: Approx. usual waist size 34"
Tagged Size 36: Approx. usual waist size 36"

Please note that the approximate size references above are offered only as a general guide for customers who usually wear similar tagged waist sizes. Because fit cannot always be judged by waist size alone, these references should be used only as a rough practical guide.

Any apparent difference between the approximate size references and the actual garment measurements is mainly due to the rise, the overall cut, and the way the garment is shaped from the hips up to the top of the waistband.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

The garment is laid flat, face up, and measured by hand with a measuring tape.

Waist: Measure straight across the top of the waistband from side to side, then double that measurement to get the full waist size.

Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam down to the bottom of the leg along the inside seam.

Front Rise: Measure straight from the crotch seam, where the inseams meet, up to the top edge of the front waistband.

Thigh: Measure the width of the leg about 3 cm (approximately 1.2") below the crotch seam, straight across from one side to the other.

Leg Opening: Measure straight across the bottom hem of one leg, from one side to the other. This measurement represents the leg opening width.

Please note: the waist measurement shown in the table should be used only as a general reference and should not be taken as a direct equivalent of your usual tagged waist size, as the fit may vary depending on the rise, overall cut, and where you prefer to wear the waistband.

Please also note that vintage-inspired garments made in Japan may fit differently from general international sizing due to the way they are designed and made to preserve a more traditional vintage character, including the rise, overall pattern, construction, and fabric character.

Because this garment has been one-washed, most initial shrinkage has already been reduced. However, slight shrinkage or stretching may still occur depending on washing, drying, and wear. If you prefer a little more room in the waist from the start, you may wish to consider one size up.

Product Description

Fabric

The fabric is a 100% cotton 11-ounce lightweight blue denim. It is woven on a shuttle loom using rope-dyed indigo yarns for the warp and gray yarns for the weft. The surface shows subtle yarn irregularities, fine natural hairiness, and a slightly uneven texture that are characteristic of traditional denim fabrics. Because the gray weft yarns subtly show through on the face of the fabric, the denim has a natural heathered cast and a slightly dry, workwear-like appearance.

Unlike modern denim fabrics that are often produced for maximum uniformity and smoothness, this fabric has a more rustic and dimensional texture. The combination of rope-dyed indigo warp yarns, gray weft yarns, and shuttle-loom weaving gives the fabric a classic blue denim character with depth and visual variation. With regular wear, the indigo surface will gradually develop fading, contrast, and a more personalized patina, allowing the shorts to age in a way unique to the wearer.

The garment has been one-washed. This process helps reduce most initial shrinkage while giving the fabric a more comfortable and wearable hand from the beginning.

Fit and Silhouette

The silhouette is designed with a high rise and a relaxed straight fit, giving the shorts a classic workwear profile. The fit is neither overly slim nor excessively loose, offering a comfortable, balanced shape with enough room through the top block and thigh. The length falls around the knee, creating a practical knee-length proportion that is easy to wear in warmer weather while still retaining the appearance of traditional work pants.

Front Closure

The front is constructed with a traditional button fly. A total of five metal buttons are used, including the waistband top button. The top button features the SUGAR CANE brand logo, while the buttons concealed inside the fly are metal donut buttons, a detail commonly associated with vintage workwear and denim trousers. The button-fly placket is also carefully constructed. Each buttonhole section on the fly is separated by individual rows of stitching, reinforcing the placket and helping maintain structure around each buttonhole. This detail adds durability to a high-stress area while giving the front closure a more authentic, workwear-oriented construction. The result is a front closure that enhances the vintage appearance of the shorts while also providing a firm and practical build.

Pocket Construction

The pocket layout is based on classic workwear utility. The front has slanted hand pockets on both sides, shaped for easy access. Above the right front pocket is a shallow utility pocket with a top-opening design. The back is equipped with large patch pockets on both sides, providing practical storage capacity while reinforcing the rugged appearance of the garment.

The front pocket bags are made with cotton pocketing cloth, and the lower portion of each pocket bag is woven more densely than the upper portion. This denser pocketing is used in the area most likely to receive stress from stored items, repeated hand movement, friction, and the weight of small objects. By strengthening the lower pocket-bag section, the construction improves durability and abrasion resistance in a part of the garment that is usually hidden from view but important for long-term wear.

The back patch pockets also include reinforcement on the inside lower section. This reinforcement cloth helps support the bottom of the pocket, where stress, weight, and friction tend to concentrate. On the outside of the garment, this internal reinforcement is visible as a horizontal line of stitching across the middle portion of the back pocket. Although it appears as a subtle design detail from the exterior, it is structurally functional and reflects the practical construction principles of traditional workwear.

Tool Details

In addition to the main pockets, the shorts feature a tool pocket on the right leg and a hammer loop on the left leg. These details are derived from classic work pants originally designed for carrying tools and small work items. On this pair, they add both functional utility and visual authenticity, strengthening the rugged character of the shorts without making them difficult to wear as everyday casual clothing.

Labels and Vintage-Inspired Trims

The label and trim details are also designed with vintage workwear in mind. A SUGAR CANE brand label is sewn onto the left back pocket, while a cloth patch is placed on the right side of the waistband. A size tag is inserted into the seam below the right back pocket, adding another workwear-style detail to the rear view of the garment.

Inside the left back pocket, a union-style tag is sewn in place. This type of label is often referred to as a union ticket or guarantee ticket and is a detail commonly found on vintage workwear, work shirts, and denim garments. Historically, such labels could indicate a union-related manufacturing background or quality assurance. In modern reproduction clothing, they serve as a period-correct design element that helps express the atmosphere and historical context of earlier American workwear. On this garment, the tag is not merely decorative; it helps reinforce the vintage workwear concept of the piece.

Sewing and Reinforcement Details

The waistband is equipped with five belt loops. The outseams, inseams, and back rise seam are sewn with triple-needle stitching, a durable construction method often associated with workwear garments. The main stitching is done in a white-tone thread, which stands out against the blue denim and emphasizes the garment's workwear construction.

Green reinforcement stitching is used at selected stress points, including the pocket openings and belt-loop areas. These contrast reinforcement stitches add both visual character and functional strength to areas that are subject to repeated pulling, movement, and wear. The combination of white stitching, green reinforcement stitching, triple-needle seams, and reinforced pocket construction gives the shorts a detailed and authentic workwear finish.

A vintage-style flasher is attached to the right back pocket with staples. This flasher is intended as a removable store-display detail and should be removed before wear. Together with the labels, pocket construction, contrast stitching, and workwear hardware, it contributes to the classic Sugar Cane presentation and enhances the overall vintage-inspired appearance of the garment.

Summary

This pair combines the easy wearability of 11-ounce lightweight denim with the durable construction and practical details of traditional American workwear. Although designed as warm-weather shorts, the garment is built with attention to fabric character, sewing specifications, hardware, labels, pocket reinforcement, and utility details. With wear, the denim will continue to develop more depth, fading, and character, making these Sugar Cane work shorts a piece that can be enjoyed not only for their immediate comfort, but also for the way they age over time.

Because this garment is dyed with indigo, the dye may bleed or transfer. Please wash separately and do not wash together with other items.
Color transfer may also occur when the garment is damp from sweat or rain, or when it is exposed to friction.

Important Indigo Dye Notice

This product is made with indigo-dyed denim. Indigo dye is known for developing beautiful fading and character with wear, but excess dye on the surface of the fabric may rub off more easily, especially while the garment is still new. This natural characteristic of indigo denim is often referred to as crocking or color transfer.

Until the garment has been worn and washed several times, please avoid pairing it with light-colored clothing, bags, shoes, furniture, car seats, or other items that may be affected by color transfer. We also recommend washing this item separately from other garments.

When washing, please separate it from other items, as dye migration may occur. Do not use bleach, a clothes dryer, or hot water. Please avoid soaking the garment for a long period of time, and do not leave it wet or folded together with other items, as the dye may bleed or transfer while damp. Color transfer may also occur through perspiration, rain, moisture, or friction during wear. Please handle with care.
