This men's long-sleeve twill plaid work shirt is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Based on classic American work shirts of the 1950s and 1960s, it combines practical garment construction with a richly textured plaid woven from six warp colors and four weft colors. The 100% cotton twill is lightly brushed on both sides, preserving the definition of the weave while giving the fabric a subtly softened surface. A one-wash finish reduces its initial stiffness while retaining moderate body. The design features a regular shirt collar with a separate stand, a six-button front, two buttoned chest patch pockets, a double-layer back yoke, rounded cuffs, and a curved shirttail hem. Triangular side gussets, extended chainstitch tails, and two-needle felled seams carry through the traditional workwear construction. Its classic fit provides moderate room through the chest and torso, with balanced shoulders and a natural fall toward the hem, making it suitable for wear on its own, open over a T-shirt, or beneath a jacket.
Size and Fit Guide:
Gender: Men.
Fit: This shirt has a classic work-shirt fit with moderate room through the chest and torso. The shoulders are designed to sit naturally without a pronounced dropped-shoulder effect, while the body provides comfortable ease without excessive fullness. The silhouette is neither especially slim nor oversized, with a natural line from the chest toward the hem.
The set-in sleeves establish a defined transition from the shoulders to the arms. The shirttail hem is relatively level around the center of the front and back, then curves upward toward the side seams, giving the lower edge a natural shape when worn untucked. The cotton twill has enough body to maintain a distinct shirt silhouette while retaining the suppleness needed for everyday movement and layering.
This balance allows the shirt to be worn buttoned as a standalone top, open over a T-shirt, or beneath a jacket. The fabric gradually develops a more familiar, broken-in feel with continued wear and washing.
Fit will vary depending on your body type, the thickness of the layers worn underneath, and your preferred amount of room. Please measure a similar shirt that fits you well and compare its chest width, body length, center-back sleeve length, sleeve length from the shoulder seam, and shoulder width with the measurements below.
Our model wears Tagged Size S (14-14 1/2). He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. For reference, he normally wears a US/EU size S/36.
The following measurements show the garment itself laid flat, not the wearer's body measurements. Width is the straight-across measurement of the shirt, taken approximately 3 cm below the underarms, and does not represent the full chest circumference.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]
Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Measured with the shirt laid flat, straight across from side to side approximately 3 cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms. This is a flat width measurement, not the garment's full chest circumference or the wearer's chest measurement.
Length (Body Length): Measured down the back from the base of the collar, at the seam where the collar joins the body, to the bottom edge of the hem. The height of the collar is not included.
Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.
Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The measurement in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam down to the end of the cuff.
Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from the top of one shoulder seam to the top of the other.
Made in Japan.

100% Cotton Twill Plaid with Six Warp Colors and Four Weft Colors
The shirt is made from 100% cotton twill plaid fabric with a substantial hand and a moderate thickness suitable for everyday shirt wear. The cloth retains enough firmness and body to support the shirt's shape while remaining supple enough to move naturally. Its texture has the practical, rugged character associated with traditional work shirts without being excessively thick.
The plaid is woven using six colors of lengthwise warp yarns and four colors of crosswise weft yarns. As these colored yarns intersect, they create overlapping areas of color and tonal variation within the pattern. The design is formed by the yarns themselves throughout the weave, so the plaid is also visible on the reverse of the fabric. Both sides retain the depth and texture of a woven pattern.
Restrained Brushing on Both Sides
Both the face and reverse receive a light brushing treatment that raises only a small amount of surface fiber. This creates a fine, restrained nap while leaving the underlying weave and the character of the individual yarns visible.
The limited brushing gives the cotton a subtly softened surface without obscuring the intersections of the colored yarns. The resulting fabric combines the lightly napped feel of flannel with the visible woven texture and moderate body of cotton twill, preserving the plain, practical character of classic workwear.
One-Wash Finish
The shirt is washed once during the finishing process. This initial wash softens the stiffness of the unwashed fabric while leaving moderate body in the cloth, giving it a supple, gently settled feel from the first wear.
Prewashing also helps reduce the amount of substantial shrinkage that may occur compared with an unwashed garment. Because the fabric is 100% cotton, some further shrinkage or other dimensional change may still occur depending on subsequent washing and drying conditions and differences between individual garments. With continued wear and washing, the fabric gradually develops a more naturally broken-in texture.
Regular Shirt Collar with a Separate Collar Stand
The neckline uses a conventional turn-down shirt collar attached to a separate collar stand. The stand forms the band between the shirt body and the folded collar, giving the neckline moderate height and helping the collar maintain its three-dimensional shape.
This construction provides the defined neckline associated with a classic button-up work shirt, whether the shirt is fastened at the neck or worn with the top button open.
Six-Button Front with Reinforced Front Edges
The front opens fully with six buttons, including the button at the neckline. These buttons are positioned along the wearer's right front edge. On that side, the body fabric is turned inward to form a double layer that serves as both an integral facing and reinforcement for the button attachment points.
The wearer's left front uses a separate strip of matching fabric, folded into a double layer and sewn onto the body as the buttonhole placket. Vertical buttonholes correspond to the buttons on the opposite side. These layered front edges give the closure defined structure and support the areas repeatedly handled when buttoning and unbuttoning the shirt.
The distance between the first and second buttons is slightly shorter than the spacing between the remaining buttons. This arrangement helps keep the neckline opening relatively restrained when only the top button is left undone.
Buttoned Chest Patch Pockets with Rounded Lower Corners
A patch pocket is positioned on each side of the chest. Each pocket is cut from the same fabric as the body, with rounded lower corners, and sewn onto the outside of the shirt along its sides and bottom. The space between the applied pocket panel and the shirt body forms the storage compartment, with access through the top edge.
The upper edge of each pocket is turned inward to create a double layer and secured with stitching. This reinforces the opening where it is repeatedly handled. A vertical buttonhole is placed at the center of the folded pocket opening and fastens to a button sewn onto the shirt body behind it, allowing the pocket to close directly at its upper edge.
Set-In Sleeves Made from Single Fabric Panels
The long sleeves use a conventional set-in construction, with each sleeve cap sewn into the corresponding armhole of the shirt body. The sleeve attachment seam sits near the shoulder, forming a defined transition from the shoulder into the arm and supporting the natural shoulder line of the classic work-shirt silhouette.
Each sleeve is made from one main fabric panel joined along its underside to form a tube. This straightforward construction carries the twill plaid around the arm while keeping the main lengthwise sleeve seam on the underside.
Rounded Single-Button Cuffs and Sleeve Openings
Each sleeve ends in a cuff secured with one button. The cuff ends are rounded, and the buttonhole runs horizontally across the cuff. The cuff provides a defined finish around the wrist and continues the practical button-fastened construction used throughout the shirt.
A sleeve opening extends upward from the cuff into the lower sleeve. Unfastening the cuff allows this opening to spread, making it easier to pass the hand through the sleeve end. The opening also provides the space needed to turn back and roll the sleeve when desired.
Four-Hole Dish Buttons
Four-hole dish buttons are used throughout the shirt. Each button has a recessed center surrounded by a raised outer rim, with the attachment thread passing through the four holes in the recessed area.
This shape allows the sewing thread to sit lower within the face of the button, reducing its direct exposure to rubbing and snagging during wear. The recessed construction is a practical workwear detail intended to help limit abrasion and damage to the button attachment thread.
Double-Layer Back Yoke with an Unpleated Back
A gently curved back yoke spans the upper back between the shoulders. The yoke is constructed from two layers of fabric, reinforcing the shoulder and upper-back area where dressing, undressing, and arm movement can place repeated strain on the garment.
The additional fabric layer helps support the shape of the upper back and maintain the structure around the shoulders. Below the yoke, the back panel is left unpleated, allowing it to fall naturally toward the hem without added fullness from back pleats. This creates a clean rear silhouette and leaves a broad area of the plaid fabric visible across the back.
Curved Shirttail Hem
The hem follows a traditional shirttail shape. It remains relatively level around the center of the front and back panels, then curves upward toward the side seams. This creates a rounded transition at either side of the shirt while retaining a comparatively straight lower line through the central portions of the body.
The curved sides give the hem a natural outline when the shirt is worn untucked and retain a recognizable feature of classic American work-shirt construction.
Triangular Reinforcement Gussets at the Side Hems
Small triangular fabric gussets are attached where the side seams meet the hem. These junctions can be subjected to concentrated pulling as the wearer moves or the hem is tugged, making them useful locations for additional reinforcement.
The separate gusset pieces help distribute force around the ends of the side seams and the adjoining hem edges, reducing the tendency for stress to concentrate at a single point. Their construction reflects a practical reinforcement detail found on older work shirts.
Extended Chainstitch Tails at the Side Seams
Two chainstitch tails extend beyond the end of the stitching at each side hem. These tails are formed when the chainstitch sewing continues beyond the edge of the fabric, producing linked loops of thread without fabric between them.
The thread chains are intentionally left extending from the side seams to reproduce a traditional detail found on vintage work shirts. Their length and the way the individual thread chains lie or gather may vary slightly from one garment to another.
Two-Needle Felled-Seam Construction
Major areas subject to repeated strain use two-needle felled seams. In this construction, the fabric edges of the seam allowances are turned inward and enclosed within the folded seam, then secured with two parallel rows of stitching. Keeping the cut edges inside the seam produces a durable junction with the fabric edges protected within the construction.
The two visible stitch lines also define the seams on the outside of the shirt. In addition to reinforcing the joined fabric, these parallel rows contribute to the functional appearance associated with classic American workwear.
Made in Japan
Sugar Cane's SC29775 Twill Check Work Shirt is made in Japan. Its design brings together the construction details of American work shirts from the 1950s and 1960s with the color depth of a multicolored woven plaid and the substantial yet supple feel of lightly brushed cotton twill.
The stand collar, buttoned chest pockets, double-layer back yoke, rounded cuffs, reinforced side hems, extended chainstitch tails, and two-needle felled seams give the shirt its practical character. Its classic fit and one-wash finish bring these traditional details together in a shirt suited to everyday wear on its own or as part of a layered outfit.
