･The garment commonly known as the "Tanker Jacket" carries the official designation "Jacket, Combat, Winter" and was developed by the U.S. Army in 1940, immediately prior to America's formal entry into World War II. Originally engineered as a cold-weather combat uniform for armored vehicle personnel (most notably tank crews), the first production prototype was completed in 1941, with full-scale issuance commencing later that same year. The outer shell was constructed from tightly woven cotton twill, chosen for its durability and resistance to wind and light moisture, while the lining was made from a 26-ounce wool blanket that provided substantial warmth while maintaining flexibility and freedom of movement.
