Studio D'Artisan Men's Type I Denim Jacket - 15oz Selvedge Denim Toyoda GL3 Woven, Made in Japan (SDA SD-4101 One-Wash)
Studio D'artisan
This men's casual denim jacket is made in Japan by Studio D'Artisan (SDA), a brand known for its distinctive craftsmanship. It is a modern reproduction of a classic Type I denim jacket, cut from 15 oz heavyweight selvedge denim woven on vintage Japanese shuttle looms and developed using the brand's unique fabric-making techniques. Expertly crafted with the brand's signature attention to detail, it delivers authentic early-era design cues, period-inspired detailing, and a rugged character while still fitting naturally into a modern casual wardrobe, bridging heritage aesthetics with everyday versatility. The fabric used for this model is a non-stretch, 15 oz selvedge denim made from 100% cotton and woven in a right-hand twill construction. It has a rugged, textured feel with pronounced slubbiness and natural surface irregularities typical of vintage-style denim. The denim is woven on a Toyoda Automatic Loom GL3, a vintage Japanese shuttle loom, using indigo rope-dyed warp yarns paired with undyed natural weft yarns. This combination creates a deep indigo face with subtle contrast as the lighter weft yarns show through, along with scattered white flecks and nep-like speckling that add depth and a softly mottled appearance. The fabric retains a slightly hairy, fuzzy surface, capturing the classic hairiness associated with authentic vintage denim. This character comes from Studio D'Artisan's fabric-focused weaving approach, which prioritizes irregularity and depth rather than a perfectly uniform look. Selvedge detailing is visible along the inside edge of the front placket. A branded leather patch is attached at the inner neck. As part of the finishing process, the jacket is one-wash rinsed to reduce (not eliminate) shrinkage and to feel comfortable from the start. With wear and washing, the denim evolves uniquely to reflect each wearer's lifestyle, developing expressive fading that highlights the fabric's texture. In terms of design and construction, this jacket features a Studio D'Artisan-branded five-button metal front closure, stitched-down double front pleats, a single chest flap pocket with a button closure, a shoulder yoke panel, side pleats at the back beneath the yoke, a cinch-back strap near the hem, and single-button cuffs with rivet-reinforced sleeve vents. This jacket is sized in U.S./EU sizing and cut in a regular fit, giving it a balanced silhouette that is easy to wear for everyday casual style. As a lightweight, unlined outer layer with no insulation, it has enough room to layer comfortably over a sweatshirt or hoodie during the transitional seasons. This is a new original release from Studio D'Artisan that combines classic styling with the brand's signature craftsmanship.

Fabric Type : The fabric used for this model is a non-stretch, 15 oz selvedge denim made from 100% cotton and woven in a right-hand twill construction. This character comes from Studio D’Artisan’s fabric-focused weaving approach, which prioritizes irregularity and depth rather than a perfectly uniform look.
Lining/Insulation: None (unlined, uninsulated); single-layer 15 oz. selvedge denim shell with no internal lining, padding, or fill. Constructed as a true single-layer jacket (no quilted layers or interlining), resulting in a breathable, lightweight outer layer for mild to cool transitional weather (spring/fall). Allows easy layering over a sweatshirt or hoodie without excessive bulk.
Front Closure: Front placket with five Studio D’artisan-branded metal tack buttons in an antique finish; button-through closure with evenly spaced buttons for a classic Type I-style front. Buttonholes are set horizontally.
Collar: Classic shirt-style turn-down point collar; structured single-layer denim collar with clean topstitching for a traditional workwear look.
Chest Pocket: One left-chest patch pocket with a flap and button closure. The underside of the flap is backed with an additional fabric layer for reinforcement. For added durability, the upper corners of the pocket (concealed under the flap) are secured with metal rivets to resist stress and prolong durability.
Front Pleats: Twin vertical pleats are positioned symmetrically on either side of the button placket. Each pleat is stitched down from the bottom edge of the yoke through the lower torso, reinforcing the front panels while replicating period-correct Type I detailing. These stitched-down pleats are designed to open slightly with movement, improving range of motion and allowing the denim to drape and contour more naturally as it breaks in.
Back Construction: Straight yoke panel across the upper back. The back body below the yoke is made from a single continuous panel (one-piece back) for added strength and period-correct construction. Side pleats positioned beneath the yoke help expand the upper back during movement for improved shoulder mobility. At the lower back hem, a pronged cinch-back strap with a metal buckle allows waist adjustment and helps maintain a secure, stable fit. (Please note: the cinch strap hardware and rivets may scratch car seats, sofas, or other surfaces.)
Sleeves: Set-in sleeve construction with full-length arms. Cuffs are finished with a single button and feature placket openings reinforced with rivets to prevent tearing and extend service life.
Leather Patch: Genuine leather brand patch sewn into the inner neck for authenticity and traditional finishing detail.

Toyoda Automatic Loom Works GL-3 (GL3) Shuttle Loom
An Early Motor-Driven Japanese Shuttle Loom
The GL-3 was produced by Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in the postwar era (often associated with the 1950s) and is regarded as an early example of Japan's motor-driven shuttle looms. Production was limited, and surviving machines are uncommon today, which contributes to its reputation among vintage-denim makers.
Maintenance-Intensive by Nature
Keeping a GL-3 running requires specialized knowledge and hands-on upkeep. With original replacement parts no longer readily available, repairs often rely on compatible components sourced from other retired looms and careful adjustment by experienced technicians. Without regular attention, the loom can easily drift out of optimal operation.
Slow Output, Small-Batch Suitability
Compared to modern high-speed looms, the GL-3 operates at a much slower weaving pace (often cited as only a few meters per hour). While inefficient for mass production, this slow, controlled output is well-suited to small-batch fabrics where character and texture are prioritized over volume.
Why It Is Sometimes Nicknamed a "Phantom Loom"
Among denim enthusiasts, the GL-3 is often nicknamed a "phantom loom" because of both its rarity and the distinctive fabric character it can produce. Its mechanical behavior and slower operation tend to yield an uneven, vintage-like surface that is difficult to replicate on modern high-speed equipment.
The Appeal of GL-3-Woven Denim
Vintage-Like Surface Texture
Because the loom runs slowly and can be tuned with relatively low yarn tension, the fabric often shows natural irregularities such as slubs, subtle density variation, and an organic, uneven hand that reads as authentically vintage.
Substantial Hand and Visible Character
GL-3-woven denim is often described as rugged and textured, with pronounced slubbiness, tonal irregularity, and a naturally neppy surface. With wear, it breaks in progressively and develops a rich patina as the fabric softens and conforms to the wearer.
Craftsmanship Through Loom-Specific "Recipes"
To fully express the GL-3's characteristics, makers may tailor yarn thickness, rope-dye parameters, indigo shade, and weave density specifically for this loom. These controlled choices help translate the loom's mechanical "signature" into visible texture and depth in the finished denim.
A Symbol of Craft Over Efficiency
Denim woven on a GL-3 reflects a production philosophy that values hands-on adjustment, irregularity, and character rather than speed and uniformity. Each roll requires ongoing monitoring and fine tuning, making human skill an essential part of the final fabric quality.
The Toyoda GL-3 is more than a vintage machine. Its limited availability, maintenance demands, and slow output make it impractical by modern standards, yet those same constraints help produce denim with a uniquely vintage surface. The fabric it creates carries not only physical texture, but also the imprint of careful control, patience, and craft.
Care Instructions
・Machine wash cold to warm (up to 104°F / 40°C) on a gentle cycle.
・Do not use bleach (no chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach).
・Do not tumble dry.
・Iron on low to medium heat (up to 300°F / 150°C) with a pressing cloth.
・Do not dry clean.
Handling Indigo-Dyed Products
・This product is dyed with indigo. Indigo dye is designed to fade with wear and washing, and some color transfer (dye rub-off) may occur.
Please understand this as a natural characteristic of indigo-dyed fabric, and handle with care, especially during the first few wears and washes.
・Be cautious of color transfer caused by friction (crocking)
During wear, dye may transfer to other garments or items through rubbing, such as light-colored clothing, bags, upholstery, chairs, car seats, or other surfaces.
Please take extra care when pairing with white or light-colored items.
・Washing instructions
Indigo dye may transfer during washing, so we recommend washing separately.
To help reduce surface abrasion and uneven fading, turn the garment inside out before washing.
Use cold water and a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Avoid scrubbing, soaking with other items, and do not use bleach.
After washing, reshape if needed and air dry naturally. Repeated washing will gradually help stabilize excess dye.
・Be mindful of water and sweat
Moisture from sweat or rain can make color transfer more likely. If the garment becomes damp, avoid contact with light-colored items until fully dry.
・Drying and sunlight
To minimize discoloration and excessive fading from light exposure, dry the garment inside out and preferably in the shade or out of direct sunlight.
Please handle with care and enjoy the unique aging and character of indigo-dyed products.
