Studio D'Artisan Men's Heavyweight Jacquard Work Shirt, Sashiko Stitch Boro/Noragi-Inspired Slub Plaid, 100% Cotton, Made in Japan (SDA 5651)

Studio D'artisan

This men's casual long sleeve work shirt is made in Japan by Studio D'Artisan (SDA), a brand known for its distinctive craftsmanship. It is a modern reinterpretation of the classic work shirt, blending classic American workwear design with a jacquard-woven fabric inspired by traditional Japanese workwear aesthetics associated with sashiko, boro, and noragi. Developed using the brand's unique fabric-making techniques, this shirt delivers authentic design cues and period-inspired character while fitting naturally into today's casual wardrobe, bridging heritage aesthetics with everyday versatility. This shirt is made from a distinctive heavyweight 100% cotton fabric inspired by traditional Japanese workwear textiles, especially boro and noragi garments often associated with sashiko repair and reinforcement. The fabric is a 100% cotton jacquard weave, built by interlacing thick, irregular slub yarns in several tonal shades to recreate the faded, timeworn character of well-used garments. The result is a rugged, richly textured fabric with a blurred, tone-on-tone plaid pattern in earthy colors. Both the warp and weft use a combination of thick, uneven slub yarns and heathered yarns, all 100% cotton, dyed in multiple closely related shades to create depth and a naturally softened look. To further enhance the surface texture, contrasting white threads are randomly applied in sashiko-style running stitches across the base cloth in both horizontal and vertical directions, adding visual dimension and a handcrafted feel. By pairing the heavy slub-plaid foundation with sashiko-style stitching, this piece evokes the classic look and atmosphere of traditional boro and noragi textiles. As part of the finishing process, the garment is pre-washed (one-wash) to help minimize shrinkage and to give the fabric a broken-in appearance and feel from day one. Because it uses a heavyweight fabric, it works well worn on its own as a shirt, as an overshirt (shirt jacket) layered over a T-shirt, or as a comfortable mid-layer under a jacket in colder weather. In terms of design and construction, this shirt features set-in long sleeves, a full front button closure with natural corozo buttons, and a standard collar with a collar band. The cuffs are finished with a double-button closure and sleeve plackets, allowing two levels of wrist adjustment. It is equipped with two chest patch pockets, . The back is finished with a classic back yoke for added structure and durability. Additional details include a rounded shirttail hem with reinforced side gussets for strength. This item is tagged in Japanese sizing, which generally runs slightly smaller than standard U.S. and European sizes. For reference, a tagged Japan 38 often fits like a US/EU Small to Medium, or roughly a 36-38 in shirts and jackets. The fit is regular, offering a well-balanced silhouette that is neither overly slim nor overly loose. This is a brand-new original release from Studio D'Artisan, blending classic work shirt styling with fabric inspired by traditional Japanese noragi, boro, and sashiko textiles, and finished with the brand's signature attention to detail.

Noragi Boro Sashiko: A Modern Homage to Japan's Workwear Heritage

- In traditional Japanese clothing culture, when kimono were still worn as everyday garments, cotton cloth was a precious resource. Worn or damaged items were rarely discarded. Instead, garments were patched, hand-stitched, and reinforced with sashiko, a practical form of visible mending that uses small running stitches to strengthen high-wear areas. In this way, clothing was kept in use for as long as possible.

- Over time, this culture of repair came to be expressed through three closely related ideas: noragi (field workwear), boro (patched and repeatedly mended textiles), and sashiko (reinforcement stitching). Together, they reflect Japan’s practical workwear tradition as well as the spirit of mottainai, a deep respect for resources and an aversion to waste. These techniques were especially important in earlier eras, when cloth was too valuable to throw away.

- As years passed, layered patches and rhythmic lines of visible stitching formed a distinctive aesthetic. What once signified hardship and frugality is now appreciated as beauty in imperfection, artistry in utility, and an early model of sustainability. Repairs, patches, and stitches gradually transformed everyday garments into textiles that feel almost like folk art.

- Studio D’Artisan reinterprets this spirit through a modern lens. The brand has developed an original “Noragi/Boro Sashiko Jacquard” fabric woven with uneven slub yarns, creating a surface that feels timeworn and deeply textured. The muted, naturally faded tonal character evokes the look of cloth passed down over generations. Sashiko-style stitching laid in varied directions adds depth and warmth, lending an irregular charm that recalls the handworked nature of the originals.

-This fabric stands as a contemporary homage to Japan’s workwear heritage, blending inherited aesthetics with the refined craftsmanship of Japanese artisans. Presented here as “NORAGI BORO SASHIKO,” it carries the spirit of the past into a new textile form, connecting tradition with modern fabric-making.
