Buzz Rickson Tanker Jacket - Men's Reproduction of the U.S. Army Late-Model Slash-Pocket Version BR15755 Light Olive Drab

Buzz Rickson

This men's casual blanket-lined cotton jacket is made in Japan by Buzz Rickson, a military wear-focused brand under Toyo Enterprises, renowned for vintage reproduction garments and signature craftsmanship. Part of Buzz Rickson's U.S. Army collection, this piece is a reproduction of the "Jacket, Combat, Winter" - a cold-weather jacket originally developed for U.S. Army tank crewmen and widely known as the Tanker Jacket. The Tanker Jacket was manufactured in two main versions: an early type with external patch pockets and a later type with inset slash pockets. This model follows the later specification, featuring dual slash pockets positioned high on the torso, just as in the wartime originals. Expertly crafted with Buzz Rickson's attention to detail, it recreates the distinctive features of the original while offering durability for everyday wear. Its timeless design reflects historical authenticity and also pairs naturally with today's casual fashion, bridging vintage aesthetics and modern use. This jacket is constructed using a two-layered fabric composition for insulation and durability. The outer shell is made from high-density cotton twill in a light olive drab color, offering period-correct texture. The interior is fully lined with a 26 oz. wool blanket material, providing warmth in cold weather conditions. Key functional details include a front zipper closure equipped with an internal storm flap for added wind protection, and a double-layer wool knit stand collar, cuffs, and waistband in authentic olive drab for secure insulation at key heat retention points. The jacket also features a bi-swing back panel to enhance mobility, a design element originally intended to accommodate the movement of tank crewmen. Two slanted slash pockets are positioned high on the front of the jacket - rather than at the lower body - as a practical and historically accurate design feature. This garment is sized according to US/EU standards and is engineered to provide a balanced, comfortable fit with moderate ease through the chest. Drawing from its military-issue origins, the design prioritizes functional mobility within confined vehicle interiors - specifically tanks - making it well-suited for pairing with heavier base layers while maintaining full range of motion. The silhouette is characterized by a relaxed cut through the torso and arms, paired with a shortened front and back body length. This results in a distinctly boxy, square-shaped profile consistent with original WWII Tanker Jacket specifications. The cropped length also prevents the jacket from bunching when seated, further reinforcing its combat-oriented practicality. This item is a brand-new, original creation from Buzz Rickson, combining vintage military aesthetics with the brand's signature high-quality craftsmanship.

Outer Shell: Crafted from 100% high-density cotton twill in a light olive drab color. This non-stretch, tightly woven fabric is engineered for durability and abrasion resistance. While rugged and structured in appearance, it retains a natural softness that provides a comfortable wear over time. Designed for long-term utility under field conditions.

Lining: Fully lined with a 100% wool blanket (26 oz.) throughout the body and sleeves. This brushed wool interior provides moderate thermal insulation without the excessive bulk of modern synthetic puffers. Though the texture retains a slightly coarse and scratchy hand feel - true to the original military-grade material - it effectively traps heat and offers reliable cold-weather protection, even in harsh conditions. Ideal for mid-season wear or as a winter outer layer when combined with proper base layers. Faithfully constructed to wartime specifications for function and authenticity.

Front Closure / Placket Configuration: Equipped with a period-correct TALON nickel zipper at the front, reinforced with an internal wind shield (storm flap) positioned behind the zipper tape. This construction enhances wind resistance and reflects original military functional design. Note on Zipper Function: This garment is equipped with a reproduction vintage-style zipper rather than a modern smooth-action zipper. As a result, it may feel stiffer to operate and can occasionally catch during use. Please understand that this is an intentional feature of the vintage reproduction and not a defect in the product.

Collar and Hem: Constructed with folded, double-layer knitted wool, the stand-up collar and waistband are designed to trap heat and block cold air, ensuring consistent warmth and comfort.

Cuff Construction: Made with folded, double-layer knitted wool, the cuffs are designed to trap heat and prevent cold air from entering, providing reliable warmth and comfort. The cuff structure features a graduated rib knit - transitioning from fine (high-gauge) at the opening to coarse (low-gauge) at the base - providing a snug yet flexible fit to seal out wind and cold.

Back Construction and Cropped Length: Incorporates a bi-swing back design with dual action pleats at the rear to facilitate enhanced upper torso articulation. This mobility-focused construction is complemented by a deliberately cropped body length - engineered to reduce excess fabric accumulation around the waist when seated, particularly within confined environments such as armored vehicles or combat transport. The shortened hemline ensures a streamlined fit during high-mobility scenarios, while faithfully adhering to original U.S. Army uniform specifications for functionality, combat readiness, and ergonomic efficiency.

Pocket: Two inset, slanted slash pockets are positioned high on the front body near the center. These externally accessible utility pockets are simple, durable, and highly functional - faithfully replicating the original specifications found on late-model U.S. Army winter combat jackets.

Pattern & Color: Unadorned, solid-color design with a utilitarian military aesthetic. No prints, embroidery, or decorative elements.

U.S. Army Tanker Jacket

The garment commonly referred to as the "Tanker Jacket" carries the official designation "Jacket, Combat, Winter" and was developed by the U.S. Army in 1940, immediately prior to America's formal entry into World War II. Originally engineered as a cold-weather combat uniform for armored vehicle personnel - most notably tank crews - the first production prototype was completed in 1941, with full-scale issuance commencing later that same year. The outer shell was constructed from tightly woven cotton twill, selected for its durability and resistance to wind and light moisture. The lining consists of a 26-ounce wool blanket, providing insulation while maintaining flexibility. Key structural elements, including the underarms and sleeves, utilize double-needle flat-felled seams for superior strength and seam integrity under field conditions. The back panel is configured with dual bi-swing pleats to enhance shoulder mobility, especially critical within the confined interiors of armored vehicles.

Two primary production variants of the Tanker Jacket were issued. The early pattern (first model) featured externally applied open-top patch pockets located at the lower front of the garment, while the later pattern introduced slanted slash pockets positioned higher on the torso - an ergonomic revision intended to reduce the risk of items falling out during movement. While initially issued to armored divisions, the jacket saw widespread use across various branches due to a shortage of adequate winter gear, and was repurposed as a makeshift flight jacket in the European Theater. Following the adoption of the standardized M-1943 Field Jacket - designed for multi-environment versatility - the Tanker Jacket saw a decline in official distribution and was relegated to more limited issuance.

This reproduction is an accurate representation of the late-pattern Tanker Jacket, featuring the correct slash-pocket configuration and authentic wartime construction details faithful to original U.S. Army specifications.
