Sugar Cane

These men's double-front denim work pants are made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Based on double-front dungarees found in American workwear after World War II, this model combines traditional utility construction with Sugar Cane's original 10.5 oz. denim, woven from a blend of 85% cotton and 15% sugarcane fiber. Indigo-dyed warp yarns, gray weft yarns, small pale neps, and subtle yarn irregularities give the fabric a textured, naturally varied appearance. The long front overlays form the hand pockets at the top and continue downward to create double-layer knee reinforcement, while large rear patch pockets, a right-side tool pocket, seven belt loops, and a four-button fly complete the practical design. A one-wash finish softens the initial feel while retaining the fabric's body. The high rise and relaxed, wide straight legs preserve the substantial proportions of vintage work pants while making the design suitable for everyday casual wear.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

Our model is wearing a tagged size 30. He stands approximately 5'9" (175 cm) tall, weighs approximately 130 lbs (59 kg), and has a chest measurement of approximately 36 inches (91 cm). His usual size in U.S. denim is W29.

Fit: These pants have a high rise and a relaxed straight fit with wide legs. They provide room through the hips and thighs, with little narrowing from the knees to the hems. The long double-front panels and their visible stitching emphasize the vertical lines of the front legs. The front opening uses a button fly. The denim is non-stretch, and the one-wash finish gives it a more supple feel while retaining moderate firmness and body.

Available sizes: Tagged sizes 30, 32, 34, 36, and 38.

[Approximate Size Reference]

The following is a general size-selection guide based on the tagged sizes you usually choose in other pants. These ranges refer to your usual pants size labels, not your body-waist measurement or the actual garment measurements of these pants. Please use them only as an approximate starting point when selecting your size.

Tagged Size 30: For customers who usually choose pants tagged approximately 29-30 inches.

Tagged Size 32: For customers who usually choose pants tagged approximately 31-32 inches.

Tagged Size 34: For customers who usually choose pants tagged approximately 32.5-33 inches.

Tagged Size 36: For customers who usually choose pants tagged approximately 34-35 inches.

Tagged Size 38: For customers who usually choose pants tagged approximately 35.5-36.5 inches.

Sizing can vary between brands and styles. These pants have a high rise, so the waistband may sit at a different position on your body than it does with your usual pants. Your body proportions, preferred waistband position, and desired fit will also affect which size feels most comfortable.

Before selecting your size, please measure a similar pair of high-rise, non-stretch pants that fits you well and compare its measurements with the actual garment measurements below. Please consider the waist, front rise, and thigh width together rather than relying on the tagged size alone.

[Actual Garment Measurements]

The following measurements are taken from the garment itself, not from the wearer's body. The waist measurement is calculated by doubling the width measured straight across the top of the waistband with the pants laid flat. Thigh and leg-opening measurements are the flat widths of one leg and are not doubled.

In inches
Size Waist Inseam Front Rise Thigh Leg Opening
30 29.9" 32.3" 11.8" 13.0" 9.1"
32 31.9" 32.3" 12.2" 13.0" 9.4"
34 33.1" 32.3" 12.2" 13.4" 9.8"
36 34.6" 32.3" 12.6" 14.2" 10.2"
38 36.6" 32.3" 13.4" 14.6" 10.6"

In centimeters
Size Waist Inseam Front Rise Thigh Leg Opening
30 76cm 82cm 30cm 33cm 23cm
32 81cm 82cm 31cm 33cm 24cm
34 84cm 82cm 31cm 34cm 25cm
36 88cm 82cm 32cm 36cm 26cm
38 93cm 82cm 34cm 37cm 27cm

When selecting your size, please use the actual garment measurements as your primary reference rather than relying on the tagged size alone. Please measure a similar pair of pants that fits you well using the methods below and compare the waist, rise, thigh width, inseam, and leg opening.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

The garment is laid flat and measured by hand with a measuring tape.

Waist: Measure straight across the top of the waistband from side to side, then double that measurement to obtain the full waist measurement.

Inseam: Measure straight from the crotch seam to the bottom edge of the hem on the inside-seam side of the leg.

Front Rise: Measure straight from the crotch seam, where the inseams meet, up to the top edge of the front waistband.

Thigh: Measure the width of one leg approximately 3 cm (1.2 inches) below the crotch seam, straight across from one side to the other.

Leg Opening: Measure straight across the bottom hem of one leg, from one side to the other. This measurement represents the flat width of the leg opening.

Please note that the actual waist measurement may vary slightly between individual garments because of the fabric's characteristics and the one-wash finishing process. The depth of the rise and the position of the waistband when worn can also affect how the waist feels.

These pants are designed with a relatively high rise. Compared with typical mid-rise pants, the waistband tends to sit somewhat higher on the body, around a relatively narrower part of the waist rather than near the hip bones. Even when the measured waist is smaller than that of mid-rise pants with the same tagged size, the actual fit will depend on your body proportions and the position at which you wear the waistband.

The fit is influenced by more than the waist measurement alone. The depth of the rise, the shape of the crotch and seat, the amount of room through the hips, and the way the pattern is shaped between the hips and waist also affect how the pants fit. As a result, choosing the same tagged size as your usual pants may place the waistband differently on your body, and the waist may feel more fitted than it does in a pair of mid-rise pants.

In the garments measured by our store, the difference between the tagged size and the actual waist measurement tends to become more noticeable in the larger sizes, with the measured waist running somewhat smaller than the measurement generally suggested by the tag. At the same percentage of shrinkage, a larger starting waist circumference would lose more length, so shrinkage during the one-wash process may be one contributing factor. However, the finished measurements also depend on the pattern grading for each size and variations between individual garments.

For this reason, please check the actual measurement chart and compare it with pants you already wear comfortably before selecting your size. Slight differences may occur because of the fabric, the one-wash process, individual garment variation, and differences in measuring methods.

Vintage-Inspired Postwar Double-Front Work Pants
Sugar Cane's SC42666 work pants are based on double-front dungarees found in American workwear after World War II. The design combines a reinforced front construction with practical pocket placement and visible stitching, retaining the functional character of traditional work pants.

Long denim overlays extend from the front hand-pocket area to the knees. Their upper sections form the hand pockets, while the lower sections add a second layer of fabric over the knees. Large rear patch pockets, a tool pocket on the outside of the right thigh, and contrasting sewing thread complete the workwear construction.

These functional elements also define the appearance of the pants. The outlines of the overlays and pockets remain clearly visible against the dark denim, while the irregular surface of the cotton and sugarcane fiber fabric adds the rustic texture associated with vintage-inspired work clothing.

High Rise and Relaxed Straight Legs
The silhouette combines a high rise with a relaxed fit through the hips and thighs. The legs remain wide from the knees to the hems, with little narrowing through the lower leg, creating a substantial straight-leg shape.

The deeper rise and generous leg width preserve the proportions of traditional dungarees. The long front overlays and the stitching around their edges add pronounced vertical lines to the front of each leg, reinforcing the workwear appearance. A button fly completes the traditional front construction.

The combination of a roomy cut and relatively lightweight denim gives the pants a substantial outline without relying on a particularly heavy fabric. These proportions carry the character of classic work pants into everyday casual wear.

10.5 oz. Cotton and Sugarcane Fiber Denim
The fabric is Sugar Cane's original 10.5 oz. denim, made from a blend of 85% cotton and 15% sugarcane fiber. It is a relatively lightweight denim with no stretch, combining moderate crispness and body with a supple feel.

The fabric retains enough structure to show the shape of the wide legs, front overlays, and patch pockets, while its comparatively light weight allows it to bend and settle naturally with wear. The double-front sections contain an additional layer of the same denim, so their thickness differs from the single-layer areas of the pants.

Indigo-Dyed Warp and Gray Weft Yarns
The denim combines indigo-dyed lengthwise warp yarns with gray crosswise weft yarns. Small portions of the gray weft remain visible between the darker indigo warp yarns, creating fine variations in tone across the surface.

This interaction gives the fabric a subtly heathered appearance and visual depth within its dark indigo, navy-toned color. The surface retains a restrained overall shade while showing more variation than a uniformly colored fabric.

Slubs, Pale Neps, and Irregular Surface Texture
Small slubs caused by variations in yarn thickness and pale, whitish neps are scattered across the denim. Fine surface fibers, uneven yarns, and subtle irregularities in the weave create small raised and recessed areas throughout the cloth.

These features combine to give the fabric a textured hand and a naturally varied appearance. The lighter neps add a fine, speckled effect against the dark indigo background, reinforcing the rustic character of the denim.

The surface texture is distinct from the fabric's overall weight and flexibility. Although the denim has a visibly irregular appearance, its 10.5 oz. construction remains relatively lightweight, with a balance of moderate firmness, body, and suppleness.

One-Wash Finish and Gradual Color Development
The completed pants have been washed once as part of the finishing process. This one-wash treatment softens the initial crispness of the denim while leaving enough body to preserve the shape and structure of the garment.

Compared with an unwashed garment, the one-wash finish reduces the likelihood of substantial shrinkage during subsequent laundering. However, minor additional shrinkage or other dimensional changes may still occur depending on the washing method, drying conditions, and individual garment.

With repeated wear and washing, the fabric gradually becomes more familiar to the wearer's movements, and the indigo develops natural tonal variation and fading. The resulting texture and color changes contribute to the evolving appearance of the denim.

Four-Button Fly with Branded Metal Buttons
The front closure consists of one top button at the waistband and three additional buttons along the fly, for a total of four buttons. The metal buttons are stamped with the SUGAR CANE brand logo.

Below the waistband, the three fly buttons are attached to the wearer's right front panel. Three corresponding buttonholes are positioned on the left side. This arrangement closes the front opening through a layered fabric fly construction.

Layered Fly Facing with Horizontal Stabilizing Stitches
The buttonholes are worked into a layered fabric section on the buttonhole side of the fly. Horizontal rows of stitching run between the individual buttonholes, dividing the facing into separate stitched sections.

These transverse stitches secure the overlapping fabric layers at intervals around the buttonholes and help stabilize the shape of the fly facing. The layered fabric and metal-button closure form a traditional work-pant fastening without a zipper.

Long Double-Front Denim Panels
A defining feature of this model is the double-front construction on both legs. Long panels cut from the same denim as the main body are laid over the front legs, extending from the hand-pocket area below the waistband to the knees.

The panels are stitched to the main body around their outer edges, apart from the openings used for the hand pockets. Each continuous overlay serves two purposes: its upper section forms part of a pocket, and its lower section creates the additional fabric layer over the knee.

The visible perimeter stitching outlines these elongated panels and makes the construction an integral part of the pants' appearance.

Angled Hand Pockets Integrated into the Front Overlays
The front hand pockets use the space between the double-front overlays and the main front panels of the pants. Each opening slopes downward and outward from below the waistband toward the side of the garment. The fabric along the opening is folded back and secured with stitching to finish the edge.

Instead of using a separate pocket bag suspended inside the pants, this construction uses the overlaid denim itself as one wall of the pocket. A horizontal row of stitching below the opening joins the overlay to the main front panel and forms the bottom of the pocket compartment.

The usable pocket space is therefore limited to the upper portion of the double-front panel. The full length of the overlay does not function as one continuous pocket extending to the knee.

Double-Knee Reinforcement Below the Pocket Compartments
Below the horizontal stitching that forms the bottom of each hand pocket, the same denim overlay continues down over the knee. This lower section creates the double-knee reinforcement.

The reinforcement is attached to the main front panel by the horizontal pocket-bottom stitching above it and by stitching along its lower edge and both sides. This section has no pocket opening or usable storage compartment; it functions as an additional layer of denim covering the front of the knee.

Double-knee construction is a traditional workwear reinforcement method that adds fabric where kneeling, bending, and repeated movement can place friction and stress on the front legs. Here, the straight stitching around the long overlays also gives the front of the pants a clearly defined, functional appearance.

The reinforced areas are thicker than the surrounding single-layer denim. With continued wear, localized fading and wear marks may develop along the panel edges, gradually emphasizing the outline of the double-front construction.

Partially Exposed Coin Pocket with a Selvedge Detail
A small coin pocket is incorporated into the right front hand-pocket area. It is made as a patch pocket from the same denim as the main body and is positioned partway along the slanted hand-pocket opening.

The upper edge of this separate pocket piece is folded and stitched, with the fabric's selvedge used in the folded section. The two sides and bottom are sewn down to form a small compartment separate from the main hand pocket.

Approximately the upper half of the coin pocket is exposed above the angled hand-pocket opening, while the lower half is concealed inside it. From the outside, only the upper portion is visible. Opening the main hand pocket reveals the pocket body extending behind it.

This arrangement combines a partially exposed patch pocket with the larger angled opening, allowing coins or other small items to be kept apart from the contents of the main hand pocket.

Large Rear Patch Pockets with Bartack Reinforcement
Two large patch pockets are positioned on the back, one on each side. Each pocket is cut from the same denim as the main body and stitched onto the outside of the rear panel. The lower corners are rounded, giving the pocket bottoms a gently curved outline.

The upper corners are reinforced with bartacks, which use closely concentrated stitches to strengthen the attachment points. These corners are subject to repeated stress when items are placed in or removed from the pockets and when the wearer sits down.

The bartacks reinforce these areas while remaining visible as part of the garment's practical workwear construction.

Right-Side Tool Pocket
A tool pocket is positioned below the right rear pocket and extends along the outside of the right thigh. This placement provides a separate storage area associated with traditional work pants and their use for carrying work tools.

The pocket also adds a functional detail to the side and rear outline of the pants, complementing the larger rear patch pockets and the reinforced front panels.

Double-Layer Waistband and Seven Belt Loops
The waistband is made from a strip of matching denim folded into a double-layer construction and sewn to the upper edge of the pants. Seven belt loops are arranged around the waistband.

The belt loop nearest the center back is offset toward the wearer's right rather than positioned directly over the center-back seam. This keeps the loop and the vertical rear seam from overlapping and creates an asymmetrical detail at the back waist.

Printed Cloth Brand Label
A cloth brand label is sewn between the right rear pocket and the waistband. It carries the SUGAR CANE name and an original printed design.

The use of a printed fabric label, rather than the leather patch commonly associated with jeans, complements the traditional work-pant styling and adds a distinct detail above the right rear pocket.

Light-Colored Contrast Stitching
Light-colored sewing thread contrasts with the dark indigo denim throughout the pants. The stitching around the double-front panels and pockets secures the overlapping fabric while clearly outlining their shapes.

These visible lines make the construction easy to recognize, from the long front overlays to the edges of the patch pockets. The contrast between the lighter stitching and the neppy, uneven denim surface contributes to the rugged appearance of classic American workwear.

Narrow Folded Hems with Chainstitching
The hems are finished by turning the fabric edges inward in a relatively narrow fold and securing them with chainstitching. The narrow turnback gives the bottoms of the legs a clean finish while retaining the simple construction of traditional work pants.

Turning up a hem reveals the gray tone of the weft on the reverse of the denim, together with the folded construction and stitching. When the pants are worn with rolled cuffs, the lighter reverse provides a visible contrast with the dark indigo outer surface.

Made in Japan
Made in Japan, these work pants bring together long double-front panels, double-knee reinforcement, large rear patch pockets, a right-side tool pocket, seven belt loops, and a four-button fly. Each element reflects the practical construction of classic American work pants.

The original 10.5 oz. blend of 85% cotton and 15% sugarcane fiber adds Sugar Cane's distinctive fabric character to that structure. Its pale neps, irregular yarns, gray weft, and dark indigo warp create texture and tonal depth within the relatively lightweight denim.

As the pants are worn and washed, the fabric's feel and indigo color gradually change. Wear marks may emerge around the double-front stitching, panel edges, and knees according to the wearer's movements and daily use, giving the original construction an increasingly individual appearance.

Handling Indigo-Dyed Denim

Color Transfer Through Friction and Moisture
This product contains indigo dye. Color may be released through friction during wear or through washing and may transfer to other clothing, bags, shoes, belts, furniture, chairs, sofas, vehicle seats, and other surfaces.

Take particular care when the denim is damp from perspiration, rain, or other moisture, as these conditions can increase the possibility of color transfer. During the early stages of wear, avoid combining the pants with white or light-colored clothing and accessories. Dark-colored clothing is recommended during this period.

Separate Washing and Prompt Drying
Always wash these pants separately, as released dye may transfer to other garments. Avoid leaving the wet pants in contact with other clothing or objects, and do not leave them wet for an extended period.

After washing, promptly reshape the pants and hang them to dry in the shade. Although the garment has already been one-washed, further slight shrinkage or dimensional changes may occur depending on washing and drying conditions.

Always follow the care instructions attached to the actual product.
